“Good 3* Hotel not 4*”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2010

This hotel is amazingly located but the services, the look, the food and the room facilities are not at 4* level, even though you pay for so.
The food is ok and varied but it's quite industrial. The room facilities are outdated. The service is ok but they try to charge you for every small thing, e.g. a swimming cap costs €5.
We had a lovely stay I recommend this hotel for its location and for those who don't look for a 4* hotel.

“A good experience, small changes could have made it even better”

Well, where do you start. Ischia is a small island off the Bay of Naples.

Transfers from the Airport - Ischia taxi companies will charge 200 euros one way for an escorted transfer - - take note : Come out of the airport, and straight outside is a bus that will take you to the bus terminal for 3 Euros each (children free), on arrival at the port, buy your ticket (49 euros approx for 2 x ads and 2 x children) .... when you get off the boat at Ischia this hotel is a 10 minute walk. We were unsure where it was, however be careful - the taxi driver charged us 15 euros for no more than a 5 minute journey navigating the "long way" - hence we walked back ! !

The hotel. The hotel is in a great location, however luckily we had paid for a sea view, the view over the pool to the sea is absolutely fantastic. We were in Room 205 which is directly over the pool and was a family room of a good proportion. The air conditioning stopped working and they promised a fix the next day, however it was another day before resolution .

Meals - we were half board. THe breakfast is adequate, truly continental. Evening meal has to be ordered at breakfast time and is of a mixed standard - very strange combinations of dishes and especially what they put with it !

Pool- is relatively small compared to others we've seen in other parts of Italy, however was clean. There are hardly any sun beds and as such Italians seem to secure them at an unearthly hour and use them for 5 minutes during the day ! Sun beds on the beach are chargeable at 7 euros each so be careful as the cost adds up

We visited this hotel in August when many Italians holiday. The majority of people in the hotel at this time were older Italians that sat at the pool edge and didn't want kids to play. . so long as you bring yourselves to ignore the minority that clearly didn't want you there you get by !

overall, this hotel is of a good standard, but as with many European hotels it's a good 3 star ... the only thing that the hotel provides that we think deserves the 4 star rating is the waiter service at dinner.

Ischia itself is lovely, but exceeding expensive. 4.50 Euros for a beer is excessive compared to mainland Italy. There is a really good shopping street in Ischia town, however can be a little monotonous after a while ! Little night life exists here as the evenings are spent sauntering up and down the streets

A great experience, mmmmm 11 nights was adequate - would we return ? The hotel is good, but not exceptional and once been to Ischia you'd have to really fall in love with it to go back.

“This should have been so relaxing...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2007

This should have been such a relaxing holiday. The location of the Solemar Terme is excellent. It is close to the port for a wide variety of boat trips, just a short walk from the main street with endless small shops ideal for an evening stroll, a ten minute walk away from the bus terminus where you could catch a bus to anywhere on the island and right on the beach for days when you want to swim and relax.
The hotel is clean, the rooms are clean and of a fair size and the food is excellent, although it is advisable to go into the evening meal fairly promptly as those guests who preferred to eat a little later often found that the dessert had run out.
Unfortunately several niggles built up to spoil what should have been a lovely holiday.
We had booked a room with a terrace or balcony. We didn't expect a sea view as we hadn't paid a supplement but found that our balcony was a small 'juliet' style bacony which we were not able to sit out on.
The pool is clean but unfortunately it is often invaded by local children who come up the steps from the beach and into the hotel grounds. Although the management eventually come out and deal with the invaders it often fell to the guests to summon management. We felt that our privacy was invaded and didn't feel that we could leave any belongings by the pool.
Before booking it would be very wise to check whether or not your holiday company includes sun bed charges. We had booked with Thomas Cook and, along with other guests who had booked with Citalia ,understood that sunbeds by the pool were free but sunbeds on the beach were payable locally. We were shocked to find that we were expected to pay 7euros per day per person for sunbeds by the pool. We refused to sign anything but other guests who signed were charged the full amount.
Do also check your final bill. We weren't too surprised to find items that we hadn't signed for ( this can happen anywhere) but we were very shocked to find that we had been charged 4euros each for limoncellos that we had been served at the gala and buffet evenings. We were staggered as these had been served to our table, on one evening during the main course. We had not requested these drinks and did not sign for them, we understood them to be entirely complimentary.

“Life is a beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2007

Stayed a week in the Hotel Solemar Terme in July. It was HOT...We booked through Thomas Cook with Citalia. To really enjoy this place you need to speak Italian. Not much English spoken, and keep an eye on your bill. We were charged for using the beach (72 Euros/room) even though we opted for the Spa, which included the beach charge. This is fine, but our Citalia was supposed to include the beach charge. Also, we paid for Beach View rooms, but were put into rooms 402 & 404. These rooms are on the back side of the hotel and warmed by the sun 10 hours per day. The air conditioners did not work, and we had to go outside to cool down. After 3 days, we were moved to the rooms we should have been in. After that, it was great. What a difference. The beach is on the hotel's door step, but crowded with beach umbrellas and deck chairs. It was hot, but crowded. The food on the beach was great. The best part of the whole experience was the dining room. We were on half board, and we did not have a bad meal. All the staff look like a cross between Al Pachino and Tony Bennett, but the food was wonderful!!!! I would return, if the opportunity came up again.

“Right on the beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2007

We booked a two week stay at this hotel, via Thomas Cook, on line.
The Island of Ischia is lovely, an hours ferry away from Naples.Thomas Cook were excellent on the transfers, no worries there...we were met at the airport, taken by minibus to the ferry, escorted throughout onto the ferry, and met at the other end in Ischia, where we were delivered to our Hotel. Throughout the transfers our luggage was ported for us, and the couriers were friendly and helpful.
The Hotel staff were very friendly, except that English is not spoken by everyone. The staff try their best, but sometimes it is hard to be understood. However, german is widely spoken by the staff, so between us, we managed.
The rooms were very clean, and of a decent size. Thomas Cook describe the room as ' three bedded rooms' but there were only two beds ( there were only two of us anyway ) but it implies that you are getting a larger room. There was no way our room could have accommodated an extra bed.Thomas Cook also charge an extra £252 each per fortnight for what is described as ' a view' ie sea view. Our room certainly had a sea view, but it was right up on the roof and shared the view with the solar panels.
We stayed in room 401. The best rooms are on the second floor, front sea facing, but these were mostly given to the Italians and Germans, who l presume had booked direct with the Hotel, and paid the premium rates.
The standard rooms at the back have no balcony, or view, so l would not advise going cheaper with these rooms at all.
The restaurant was on the lower ground floor and this was lovely and cool. It is very clean, with separate tables for guests. The food is plentiful, and varied, with a fish dish almost everyday, and a buffet starter.Mostly cakes and ice creams for dessert.
The beach is right in front of the Hotel, and sunbeds for both the beach, and the pool can be booked for 6 day slots. We found the sunbeds of the Hotel a bit too close together, and so for the second week we just chose beds on the beach further up, and paid daily. Be aware that the beach has plenty of ' traders and sellers' of jewellery etc, and massage girls, bothering you mornings, especially.
Ischia is a lovely Island, so take a trip out, and have a look round. The gardens belonging to William Walton are very pretty, you will see Lemons weighing 2kg...amazing.You can also take trips by boat to Sorrento, Amalfi Coast,Naples, and Capri easily from the harbour, for a day out.
All in all, a lovely place..we will definately be going again.
