I first came to Ischia 8 years ago, shortly after my wife died, as I needed a quiet restful holiday in pleasant surroundings. I chose the Hotel Hermitage from the Thomson brochure and booked a package holiday. and thoroughly enjoyed it. Two weeks of glorious sunshine with hours to spend swimming, reading or listening to classical music on RAI3. Both the food and the service were better than I had expected. The following year I made my own arrangements, booking half-board by email and getting a flight from Gatwick to Naples. The hotel organised my transport free and had a taxi waiting for me. For once, I really felt like a VIP. I have stayed there every year since. The staff at reception speak reasonable English and are always friendly and welcoming, and although I book a single room it is large enough with a pleasant outlook. Perhps one day the Hotel Hermitage will provide tea/coffee making facilities in the room per favor? The waiters in the restaurant even remember my name and that I always order a bottle of the house white wine. My dislikes? The gelati, small pre-packed straight from the freezer, as you'd get in New York or London. In Italy I expect real ice-cream! There was a time when the waiters at breakfast came round with large pots of good coffee. "More coffee sir?" was welcome sound, unlike the present day coffee machine which new guests find difficult to operate, resulting in a long queue. But who am I to complain? Later this year, my family are coming to join me on my second week at the Hotel Hermitage. There will be three generations of us. What better recommendation can I offer?
