“Not great!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 June 2008

Just back from a stay at the Best Western Hotel Regina. Whilst it is a fairly central location to the port, the hotel itself is fairly run down and VERY expensive for what you get.

Firstly, the room itself was fairly basic. We had a nice view but our air conditioning did not work. We had to complain 3 times, yet nothing was done, and it was only when we checked out we were told the setting didnt work!? Breakfast was horrid. Basic, tinned fruit and stale bread. It is not 4 star by all means. Id say 2/3 star maximum!

Anyway Ischia itself, is nice but nothing in comparison to Capri or Sorrento. I would advise not to go if you are a young couple, as it is an older community and there is not much happening other than the seaside style beaches. I would definately advise though to visit Poseidon Gardens and go early! You need a whole day and the thermal pools were amazing.

“The raggedy dog hotel - it grows on you!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2007

I thought I would write a review to balance the previous reviewers, which I relied upon previously.
We booked this hotel in a package deal with Thomas Cook., and were there for part of the World Cup in 2006. This is very unlike us as we normally go for flights and independent travel, booking hotels and apartments separately and often relying on tripadvisor users' recommendations and advice.
However, in this instance we had a week's holiday free, needed a quick getaway at a reasonable price and the photos on the website looked good.
After booking with the travel agent I phoned the hotel directly and asked to be upgraded to a suite in the hotel. I was worried that the basic hotel rooms would be small and no balcony. This cost me an extra £20 a night.
The room we were given was therefore on the first floor of the hotel and facing the front, overlooking the entrance to the hotel. It had a balcony but this was not private and we didn't spend much time on it due to our being on display to everyone arriving at the hotel. There are only thin railings dividing one balcony from another so you can literally be sat next to the door occupant! The rooms at the end of the building have wraparound balconies which are large and have sun loungers. Still not private but much better, if you were to be lucky enough to get that room (I believe they class it as the honeymoon suite though).
The room, whilst clean enough, however lacked atmosphere or comfort. It was quite large but long, with a rather uncomfortable couch against a wall which converted into a bed for extra guests. Small tv. Large bed with small bedside tables, but thin sheets/duvet. How much better the rooms would look with some throws, cushions, colourful local art or decoration, comfy chair and a few magazines. 2 really big wardrobes so plenty of hanging space. The room was quite dark & only the bedside lamps were available so difficult to create a welcoming atmosphere. Consequently, despite my extra payment, we didn't spend much time in our room!
We made friends with some other guests and they were disappointed with their standard room, said it was small and quite dark, not very welcoming. Of course all of this depends on what you are looking for in your accomodation - as the rooms were definitely clean and adequate.
The hotel is a bit dated now, and parts of it are worn and a bit shabby e.g. carpets, furnishings, hallways. The terme spa downstairs is not good, needs a good clean up and wasn't a place I wanted to spend much time. It was deserted most of our stay.
The reception area is light and airy and has lots of seats and a conference room. There is useful information for guests on trips and getting around the island although this is mostly provided by travel agents.
The guests are mostly German and Italian, we only saw a few other brits there during our stay. The pool area is nice enough although the loungers are tightly packed so again, not much privacy. There is a pool bar where you can get drinks throughout the day and snacks. A covered area where you can eat in the shade. Its quite quiet and peaceful during the day and there weren't many children at all (June)
Location is great, very central to the main shopping/eating road running through the town, fantastic cafe just on the corner and some little boutique shops nearby
I agree that there are a lot of older people in the hotel "creeping around" as another reviewer put it but this is good if you like peace and quiet. there was certainly no late night parties or noise to contend with.
Big downside however for us was the early morning cleaning regime. They started from 7am and were chattering and singing in the corridors outside our room for a good few hours. Being British we were too polite to ask them to stop until the third day, then we had a day's respite before they started again on the 5th day. Not good for a late lie in!
Possibly this is all sounding a bit negative, but I have to admit that for some reason the hotel really grew on us and from being disappointed on arrival, by the end of the week we were almost sad to leave. We referred to it as the "raggedy dog hotel" as it was like a ragged little puppy which just needed some love. The staff were - in general- friendly and helpful and welcoming, not intrusive. We enjoyed the fact that the hotel was set back from the road slightly and was therefore quiet most of the time. Even though the hotel was nearly full, it was never overally busy and we were made to feel welcome, coming and going as we pleased including returning late some nights.
We were bed and breakfast so didn't try the food, although breakfast (we made it once!) was served in a big room and there was plenty to choose from and hot drinks served to your table.
We won't be returning to this hotel, and wouldn't send our friends there specifically. However, if you are booking as a package (at a reasonable price) then it will be an enjoyable stay, and there are no particular problems to warn you off. It just doesn't warrant an excellent rating as there are so many better (more luxurious) places to stay on the island and the Regina Palace has room for improvement (funding required from its owners for basic makeover and room refurbs).

  • Liked — Great location, friendly staff, good pool and bar area
  • Disliked — Rooms need a refurb, to be more welcoming and relaxing, too basic

This hotel, visited June 05 is conveiently located for everything this beautiful island has to offer, fine beaches, friendly people, lovely food. The majority of visitors are german, italian and few British. all the menus confirm this!
Shopping here is so very expensive whith most things cheaper at home.
However this is one place my wife and i were extremely sad to leave!
The hotel staff were brilliant and the food was fine. Rooms were modern and clean if a little noisy at times.
we shall return to this hotel!

“Bella!”

We really enjoyed our stay at the Best Western Regina Palace Terme. The location is great -- just a short walk to the shops in one direction, and a short walk to the bus stop in the other direction. The staff was very helpful and kind, especially to our children. The outdoor pool was nice, but we did not try the spa. The decor is contemporary and our rooms were very spacious. There were quite a few senior citizens creeping around, but it could have been the time that we were there. Also, we were not too bowled over by the breakfast buffet, but it was sufficient. We would definitely go back.

“We love Ischia!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 November 2004

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights in September. We found the hotel very comfortable, and clean. It was great to be able to have the spa services available within the hotel, and the prices for these services were reasonable. The breakfast was great, more than adequate. It is within walking distance from the ferry, and very close to beaches, restaurants and shops as well. We thought Ischia was beautiful. It is a quick ferry ride from Naples and in September there were very few tourists. I believe, August is the busy season so I wouldn't recommend going then. Ischia is like a secret little, secluded gem in the middle of the Mediterranean. Can't wait to go back!
