Overall, this is a lovely almost colonial-style hotel set very close to the centre of Forio. Despite our Travel Agent (Thomas Cook) guaranteeing that the hotel would know that this was our honeymoon and that we would "receive extra special treatment", we were disappointed to discover on arrival that in fact the hotel had no idea of our recent nuptials. However, this was not the hotel's fault. The reception area at Hotel Lord Byron is beautiful and sumptuous but the room we were given, alas, was rather poor - the shower leaked profusely (albeit there was plenty of hot water) and was pretty small - we kept getting stuck to the shower curtain!! The little courtyard outside our room had a very tatty plastic table with the top peeling off. Both these problems (i.e the leaky shower head and peeling table) could have been sorted out for less than £20by a trip to the Italian equivalent of B&Q and would have definitely made a difference to the overall appeal of the room. Also, our honeymoon was rather spoiled by the rather irritating dog who lived in the next door apartment. The dog (called Sheila) barked constantly from 7am to 9pm!! and despite our complaints to the hotel (and their assurance that the owners had been spoken to, and the dog moved to another location) this proved not to be the case, and we felt rather let down by this.
However, on a brighter note, the bar staff - Francesco and Nicoletta - were delightful and very accommodating, providing poolside waiter service if required. The poolside area was lovely and the sunbeds plentiful and comfortable. We didn't use the thermal indoor pool facilities although they were there at our disposal. The rooms were cleaned daily and the bed was comfortable. We did not, however, have any air conditioning in our room.
Forio is a wonderful little town, full of excellent restaurants and fabulous boutiques. We dined regularly at Ristorante Epomeo, owned by the marvelous Tomaso who was exceptionally helpful and the food there was fantastic. He also speaks great English, which helped a lot.
All in all, though, we would return to Hotel Lord Byron - we'd just book a different room!!
