“Breakfast buffet now served”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 May 2011

The food was better than I expected after reading last year's reviews. There is now a breakfast buffet which gives a reasonable choice. At dinner there are 2 alternative first and second courses, with no choice for dessert. The first course was always excellent, the main course less good. Some vegetables are usually provided with the main course, although sometimes you get chips. I ate the fish dishes as they generally seemed more interesting. Swordfish and langoustines were both on the menu, which I imagine are not the cheapest ingredients. Dessert was a dish of ice cream, or slice of cake or some fruit.

We very much enjoyed our stay at the hotel.

“Scala Stunning views shame about the food”

No complaints regarding hotel, lovely and clean, views stunning, we watched the sun rise from our bedroom window, the only thing we struggled with was the food, breakfast was so boring, I like continental breakfasts but after the 3rd day I longed for cheese or ham, and maybe choice of fruit and yogurts, dinner for that night was chosen at breakfast, but there was only 2 choices for the main course and one night dessert was a bunch of grapes. There was no salads or veg after all isn't Italy renowned for its tomatoes etc, I have to say I felt the food was done on the cheap, as if it was the last week in the month before pay day and you were raiding the cupboards. The guy waiting was super, he did offer to replace the one meal I couldn't eat, but it was a bit disapointing the lack of choice, apart from that, every thing was great,

“Stunning views and location - food could be improved”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2010

We found the views from the room absolutely stunning. The rooms were spacious and very clean with lovely big balconies overlooking Ravello in the distance. However we didn't get a change of bath towels the whole week we were there - (not sure whether we were supposed to leave them on the floor as an indication that they needed changing).

There were some lovely walks directly from Scala - one in particular which shouldn't be missed is the Valle delle Ferriere. Unfortunately most iof the walks nvolved many steps (as the name suggests) so after several days of spending hours walking up and down steps we took to using the bus which ran quite frequently.

Our only criticism of the hotel was that we found the food extremely boring - breakfast was the same each morning. Dinner was pasta, followed by either fish or meat (usually veal). There was very little in the way of fresh vegetables, potatoes or salad. We also got the impression that they were trying to cater to a very tight budget. For those with a hearty appetite the portions were a bit on the small side. We also found that on a number of days the bread was stale (probably having been left out from lunch). However, the service was very efficient and friendly.

Although generally there was very little in the way of nightlife in Scala, it was an easy 30 minutes walk to Ravello if you wanted a change of scenery. We were lucky as we just happened to chance on a week where there were 2 free concerts in the square in Scala but I assume this was an exception rather than the norm. Both Scala and Ravello are quiet in the evenings - which suited us fine .

All in all we enjoyed our week here - but were glad to get home to some fresh vegetables and salad.

“Friendly hotel in stunning location”

Just returned from our second visit to the Zi'ntonio. The hotel is small, family-run and a great base for walking and touring along the Amalfi coast. All rooms have fantastic views from their balconies. looking across to Ravello and down to the sea. They are immaculately clean and well-maintained - spacious and comfortable rather than palatial. Choice at breakfast has been improved, but it's still a fairly basic continental affair. Dinner, though, is very good: expect Italian home-style cooking with interesting variety and cheap local wine! Service is friendly and faultless. Guests are made very welcome, and the atmosphere is informal and relaxing.

“A perfect little italian gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2009

I stayed for a week in July, the staff were absolutely lovely and welcoming and very helpful with my faltering Italian.
The hotel is in the most beautiful spot, jaw dropping views from every corner. Sweet little pool which was necessary when returning from strenuous hikes up and down the many stairs and hills.
The food was really very good indeed, and served with great charm and patience by Antonio on the beautiful little terrace with its panoramic vistas.
A great spot for reaching all the local attractions without having to put up with all the noise and people at the end of the day. There is a bus which goes from outside the hotel but there are more frequent ones from the village further down the road. When returning from Amalfi ask the driver if he is going to Minuta - if he is you can get the but to right outside the hotel. If he is only going to Scala it is a short walk back from the village, made easier if broken by a short visit to the bar in the square!
A truly lovely place, would recommend to couples or lone travellers. teenagers and small children would probably like the pool but not much else as there isnt much night life. But if you want to party it is easy to get the buses to Amalfi, atrani or Ravello.
Buy several 24hour unico bus tickets and you will be hot to trot.
