We stayed here last year but just wanted to write a review as it seemed like this hotel deserved more.
I had no idea what to expect when I booked this hotel but decided to take the plunge on the images the website portrayed.
We were not disappointed, this is a unique hotel with 18 rooms in total.
The pool area was amazing and we had it to ourselves for most of the day, the only downside was that it got impossibly hot so we would have to decamp to the beach. This was not a problem at all as they have their own designated beach with sunloungers and also another lovely pool. The sunloungers/umbrellas get allocated to you on arrival which we found to be a bonus as you can spend all day doing whatever you choose, exploring local area, lying by the pool etc etc and then when you decide to hit the beach, even at 6pm you know you'll be able to find your spot!
The beach is made up of nice white sand and the sea is a little rocky but beautiful once you get in. The water was warm and clear. They also offer pedalos & kayaks if you want to explore beyond and burn off some calories! Only downside I would mention is that there is a hotel next door which was alot bigger than the Porto Pirgos and at various times during the day entertainment would start (ie in the mornings when we were having breakfast I think a beach aerobics class commenced). It wasn't a huge problem but it is a point to mention.
The hotel could probably do with upgrading the food, we found dinner to be quite "quirky" but then maybe this was meant to be Calabrian-style. We actually enjoyed all aspects despite sometimes not knowing what to expect. The restaurant area is beautiful at sunset, you should not miss it. Take your aperitifs at your table and enjoy sitting there before other diners turn up. Breakfast was fine, the wasps also enjoyed it (as per previous review!).
The room was large and clean and we had a lovely view of the sea. The hotel in general is immaculate.
Franco also needs a mention as he has worked there for many years, his English isn't so good but he is never failing in trying to sort your every need. He insisted we visited the market at Tropea (where he is from) but unfortunately we just ran out of time.
I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to do something different from Tuscany or Amalfi and stay in a friendly, clean, atmospheric Calabrian environment for a reasonable price.
