“Unique, stunning hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2008

We have just returned from 4 nights at Porto Pirgos. This a great unqiue hotel set in lovely grounds.

We had a room in the tower with a fab balcony with fab views. The sunsets were amazing. The room was very comfortable with a lovely large bed and nice bathroom.

The private beach is great and although it is good that you get sunbeds/parasol allocated to you on arrival, I would say that too many have been squeezed onto the beach even though the beach was not even a 1/4 full when we were there. This means it you are fair skinned as we are and need to follow the shade under the unbrella around all day, you find yourself with not really enough room before you are encroching on the next persons space. The pools are both lovely.

The restaurant is lovely with nice views, although I would say that the food did let the hotel down a little. Our main courses came out only just warm. We chose only to have half board for one night, bed and breakfast for the other nights so we could go and explore Tropea.

A real treat of a hotel.

“Disappointing food”

The hotel is everything and more - the rooms are spacious with lovely sea views across to Stromboli, the vast grounds are managed beautifully & the pools, public areas etc. are all very tasteful. However, there are some drawbacks that we feel are worth mentioning - although the beach is sandy, it is shingle at the waters edge & shelves v. steeply, making it a little difficult to get in & even more interesting to get out! Also, the neighbouring hotel appeared to stage a musical every evening whilst we were there & although it wasn't overly loud & finished at about 10.30 it was a little intrusive - not Porto Pirgos's fault. Our main concern, though, was that we were very disappointed with the restaurant, especially the main course, & the desserts appeared to have been bought in - not what you'd expect for a 5* hotel and, in our opinion, not worth the 50 Euros p.p.

“A great find in unspoilt area of Italy - mass tourism yet to arrive!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2007

We stayed here last year but just wanted to write a review as it seemed like this hotel deserved more.

I had no idea what to expect when I booked this hotel but decided to take the plunge on the images the website portrayed.

We were not disappointed, this is a unique hotel with 18 rooms in total.

The pool area was amazing and we had it to ourselves for most of the day, the only downside was that it got impossibly hot so we would have to decamp to the beach. This was not a problem at all as they have their own designated beach with sunloungers and also another lovely pool. The sunloungers/umbrellas get allocated to you on arrival which we found to be a bonus as you can spend all day doing whatever you choose, exploring local area, lying by the pool etc etc and then when you decide to hit the beach, even at 6pm you know you'll be able to find your spot!

The beach is made up of nice white sand and the sea is a little rocky but beautiful once you get in. The water was warm and clear. They also offer pedalos & kayaks if you want to explore beyond and burn off some calories! Only downside I would mention is that there is a hotel next door which was alot bigger than the Porto Pirgos and at various times during the day entertainment would start (ie in the mornings when we were having breakfast I think a beach aerobics class commenced). It wasn't a huge problem but it is a point to mention.

The hotel could probably do with upgrading the food, we found dinner to be quite "quirky" but then maybe this was meant to be Calabrian-style. We actually enjoyed all aspects despite sometimes not knowing what to expect. The restaurant area is beautiful at sunset, you should not miss it. Take your aperitifs at your table and enjoy sitting there before other diners turn up. Breakfast was fine, the wasps also enjoyed it (as per previous review!).

The room was large and clean and we had a lovely view of the sea. The hotel in general is immaculate.

Franco also needs a mention as he has worked there for many years, his English isn't so good but he is never failing in trying to sort your every need. He insisted we visited the market at Tropea (where he is from) but unfortunately we just ran out of time.

I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to do something different from Tuscany or Amalfi and stay in a friendly, clean, atmospheric Calabrian environment for a reasonable price.

“Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2007

We had a fantastic time. The food, the room the people, the pure luxury of this hotel will definately mean a return visit for us.
The wasps at breakfast were a bit of a nusiance, but this did not stop us filling ourselves before we hit our very own sun lounges on the private beach where mineral water was served to us ! We were treated like stars. The menu at lunch time lacked variety and meant that we often ate more than we really wanted where a snack would have been succificent. Franco our waiterwas brillant, always smiling and very friendly. Our room was large, very clean, bottle of red wine was waiting for us upon our arrival complimentary! It was pure luxury, romantic and we didn't want to go home! Do not hesitate if you are thinking of going here ,you will love it, we did.

“Charming Seclusion”

Beautiful secluded beach hotel in Calabria. Extremely helpful staff. Charming spacious rooms with wonderful views. Food delicious, although a small wasp problem. 2 lovely pools sympathetically integrated into the surroundings.Tropea town close by - ('Portercole' restaurant - simple cheap great food!) Highly recommended for peaceful or romantic holidays, not for buzzy activity filled holidayers. A real find!

  • Liked — wonderful terrace and views.
  • Disliked — Bathrooms, shower only (not overly powerful) could be improved
