I stayed for 17 nights, and made many observations. First it is "personally cared for", the owner is an older gentlemen [I think name is Michael Margaritas??], and is present every day directing the employees. It is the little things that in themselves you do not usually notice, but add up to create an overall impression. The grounds are well manicured, vegetable gardens on one side, a small grape vineyard on the other, flower and cactus plantings all around. The choice in pool furniture, nice lounge chairs, clean and beautiful pool and pool deck, public areas clean. I observed many times the owner out directing the staff in the early morning "why is this ash-tray not emptied", "why is this corner of the pool deck not swept clean?" Trust me, this personal attention makes all the difference compared to corporate/commercial hotel or hotel with passive owner. It is his baby, his pride and joy!
The rooms are clean, no stains on walls or ceilings from dead bugs, no mold growing in corners of shower, slept in comfortable clean sheets. The beds are hard (no box spring mattress- just wooden slat under mattress) but I liked the bed firm, it was good. I suspect the room is about as good as it gets for being "on Island", tiled floors, small LCD TV, mini-refrigerator which is key for storing fruits and drinks from very nearby grocery store. It is not a "5 star city furnished" room with marble top bathroom vanities- but you will not find that anywhere in Naxos; but all amenities and fixtures were clean and appropriate. Air Conditioner worked fine, but much of the time I left the veranda doors wide open for nice breeze- bugs were not any issue, and safety is not issue (I left my door unlocked most times when going to pool, left my laptop on the desk with just small laptop lock to chair- but all without concern). Clientele is mix of Greek and Euro persons on vacation- families, older couples, families with mid-teen aged children, families with infants. Just guessing that there are only about 30 rooms, so easy to meet and have conversation with other guests at personal level.
Internet access in room was by LAN cable, and internet speed was decent. Had wireless in pool and lobby areas, and in many rooms I am sure had this wireless access (including my room) but I used the LAN cable.
Breakfast is at 8:00 AM (until whenever); coffee available by 7:30 AM, always had fried eggs, scrambled eggs with vegetables, sausage and bacon, fruits, breads, cereals- was nice breakfast.
Staff was very helpful, the front desk woman who worked days and the also the front desk woman who worked evenings- very personable and helpful- calling for taxis, recommending restaurants, pointing out places of interest, and just plain friendly and hospitable.
Location is perfect for me, not directly down town with its nightly busy activity in tight streets... but 8 minute walk down the beach to get to these narrow streets with stores and restaurants and tons of tourists, and can escape back to privacy and solitude at the Astir. 2 minutes to beach and some beach restaurants, about 8 minutes to town center (shopping, dense restaurants); probably about 16 or 17 minutes by foot all the way to the port where ferry comes in. Walked from hotel to town every day/night.
Of Course, when I first arrived, knowing that this was going to be home for 17 nights, I was hopeful that it would be suitable, clean, good internet.... and within minutes after arriving and being shown my room I was happy and satisfied that I had made a good choice (from doing internet research, expectations are not always met). But this was perfect. Again, good location not directly in the hub-bub of the city, but close enough to access quickly; clean and manicured, personable helpful staff, clean comfortable room, nice pool, good breakfast! All good.
