“We were impressed”

Perhaps we were lucky, but we have no real complaints. We were two families of 3 and 4 persons respectively. The smaller group had an open plan mezzanine type room with bed upstairs and sofa bed downstairs together with balcony, near the pool. Ours was in the older building near reception and had a living room with sofa bed, 2 bathrooms and a bedroom with further single-bedded section beyond a curtain, unneeded by us for sleeping purposes. Being on the ground floor we were also lucky to have a terrace with table & chairs for al fresco breakfasts etc. My advice with P & V and similar is always book the largest accommodation you can sensibly afford - it is worth it. Swimming pool and table tennis were a hit with the youngsters. The reception staff were friendly and helpful and the great thing is that it is central, so it is only a short walk down the hill to the fabulous harbour, either for breakfast supplies or dinner. No need to drive out anywhere (the bridge toll certainly deters trips to the mainland), once you have hired your cycles, which is a must. Therein lies our only mini-gripe. Seemingly unadvertised, the place has a discount arrangement with a local bike supplier. We had pre-booked bikes before arriving, but thought we would see what was on offer via P & V. Don't bother, unless you get there early - they didn't have what we wanted and the bikes looked second rate and tired. We reverted to our pre-booked shop - YOO TOO, which was excellent and they even gave us the same discount! I would throughly recommend booking with them online before you go. Be prepared for Ile de Re prices to be at the Parisian end of things to match many of the clientele at holiday times.

“Good value for accommodation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2010

We reserved for 4-5 persons although we're only 2. Bonus: 2 bathrooms! Despite adverse comments, we found the apt pleasant and comfortable (No. 17 in main bldg). The view was of a stone wall and an empty lot, but it was quiet and we didn't spend a lot of time in the rooms, although we ate breakfasts, a couple of lunches, and a couple of dinners there. Access to the port and restaurants/petites commerces was a brief, pleasant walk. Staff was pleasant, professional, and accommodating, including helping me sort out a WiFi connectivity issue (WiFi in the reception area only). Secure parking lot, pleasant-looking indoor/outdoor pool. This is the 5th or 6th P&V/Maeva we've stayed in and we've always been pleasantly surprised as many posters seem to forcus on problems rather than positives.
Personal demographics: Both in our mid-60s, experienced travellers in Europe, our 3d (my 4th) trip to France in 12 months.

“When looking for the bedroom all we could find was fold out beds .”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 July 2010

From the information on the internet the complex was rated at 4 star and sounded very comfortable and it was priced accordingly. First appearance on entry was a new and neat lounge with a 2 seater settee, a single lounge chair and a small kitchenette. We looked for the bedroom and as It turned out that this was the only room and the beds were fold out. We found these to be extremely uncomfortable and as we left opened, there was little space left in the room. At the start we had to sweep the tiled floor (no carpet) as this had not been cleaned properly.
There was no service as such and even toilet rolls were not provided. Rubbish removal was DIY. No hair dryer in the room. Everything was an extra ie phone connection 5 euro, additional towels 8 euro each, communal washing machines and dryers at commercial rates.
There was no airconditioning, fan or insect screens. As the weather was hot the room was hot and Mosquitoes were a problem at night.
Apart from the swimming pool there was little in the way of communal facilities. In this respect we were fortunate to have good weather and were not stuck inside. The gym was a single rowing machine and some rubber mats and the table tennis table was a concrete slab in the courytard. The were no international stations on the TV and it was WIFI only, no computer appeared to be available
We had booked for 6 days but left a day early as we could no longer toleratate the discomfort of the beds.

Many thanks for posting your review. We have read your comments with interest. It seems that you researched our residence prior to booking with us. Many of the points in your review, including the room layout, facilities in room including hair dryers, towels and other on-site facilities that incur additional charges are listed in detail on the website and therefore, customers can estimate how much additional budget they should bring to cover these items. We do feel that this information does need to be clearer so that this situation does not arise again. Wifi has been installed at the requests of our guests who tend to bring their own personal computers to the residence. We apologise for any negative aspect your stay sincerely and are sad to learn that you left a day early. Please take some consolation in the fact that we are determined to use your comments as part as an overall review of the residence and its services. Best wishes.

“Many places on Ile de Re are great for active parents and lively kids - this is not one of them.”

We know Pierre et Vacances from our own and friends' visits. This one is not like the others! Apartments slightly shabby, for example shower is only hand-held. More importantly, we were berated by 2 French apartment owners (yes, some accommodation on-site is privately owned) for the fact that our children played in the garden during the day and made - wait for it - noise. "This place", we were told "is known for its quiet". Atmosphere is odd for a supposedly family friendly place - garden is formally laid out although there is no other place for children to play outdoors. The only facilities for over 6's were a (cold) pool and 2 table tennis tables. For what it is worth, location is good, but go elsewhere if your kids are lively and active.

“dissapointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2007

The hotel website was misleading in describing the accommodation as luxurious. Basic would have been more appropriate. Although the exterior of the building is beautiful the interior is horribly outdated. The room bore no semblance to the photos on the website. Decor was mismatched and faded by the sun, the carpet stained and the room was generally run down and in need of redecoration. We requested a ground floor room (as we had a baby and a pram) when we booked online, and which i confirmed with a phone call but where given a room on the first floor. When we complained, the less than helpful staff offered us the option of a ground floor apartment for an extra 600 euros, we had already payed 1500 euros for the 2 weeks so declined. The website claimed there was a gym, which turned out to be a room with a rowing machine and a video game in. The pool was ok but smaller than it looked on the website and the paint was peeling on the walls. However the ile de re is fantastic and this made up for the poor accommodation.
