“Great Staff, Distinctly Average Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2009

The staff in this hotel were great, very helpful and spoke really good english. My gripe is aimed at the food and noise in the hotel, yes the NOISE. The rooms are seperated by what seems like cardboard walls and you can literally hear everything. It's far from relaxing to be woken up at 7.30am on holiday due to someone having a child with them........

The breakfast was burnt and in my opinion not worth the 15€ charge! I unfortunately had to send my meal back twice due to it not being cooked (steak) however this is an unfair gripe as it's France after all... It did take over an hour though - which was less than impressive... when it arrived it was a great steak... or maybe I was just very hungry after the wait!

The "Spa" is actually another building a few mins walk away, which is no big issue but just something to be aware of - also the saltwater pool in the spa is not great! it's about 1m20cm deep at it's max, not much good for trying to have a swim.

No vegetarian option, the one their chef prepared was a Leek, 3 potatoes (tiny) and 2 carrots (also tiny).

“Would be great in summer”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2009

This hotel was interesting, although we were there in winter, so it was very cold and baron. The rooms are large and very clean. One of the staff on the front desk was extremely rude and the other went out of her way to help us, so a bit hit and miss there. There was no internet access, and for such a large hotel this was very strange. We had breakfast delivered to our room at no extra charge, but it was a very average breakfast. Stale bread and jam. Nothing exciting. They didn't offer any cheese or ham. The hotel is miles from anything else. We drove 30 minutes each night to the nearest place for dinner. They seemed to have some cruise-ship type feel happening, with a daily letter to guests and everyone ate together in the dinning room and certain times. That didn't really appeal to us, as we prefer to eat from a menu and whenever we feel like it. So we opted to go elsewhere. This would probably be much better in summer and nice for families. It's right on the beach, so it would be gorgeous from that point of view. And most bedrooms seemed to have balconies which would be lovely in hot weather. A few things to fix, but otherwise not bad.

“great location and very friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2008

We took a chance and pitched up at the hotel late afternoon on Friday 15th Aug - peak season and national holiday, having followed signs from the village. I think we managed to find the last room on the island which was the suite, first floor and huge. Being a last minute we also got a pretty good discount which included the extensive breakfast buffet for 2 adults and 2 children.

The hotel staff were very helpful and relaxed and we ate both evenings in the restaurant which also overlooks the beach. Very good value set menu's ranging from 25 to 40 euro's with plenty of choice. The set children's menu was 12 euro's. Wine started at 16 euro's per bottle - so very reasonable given the quality and location.

The hotel is 50m from the beach front with beautiful, unrestricted views across the bay and south. The beach is a narrow sandy strip before the rock pool heaven to the sea. We spent hours finding crabs and sea life which the kids loved. More extensive sandy beaches are a short drive away further up the island with lots of water sports activities are available.

The hotel has a bike hire available for 19 euro's a day via a local franchise based in the village and the chap also brought a child seat and bike to the hotel to meet our requirements. Lots of cycle paths to the other towns and villages and we clocked up 25Km on the Sat touring around. The village has a market on Sunday mornings and the ride along the coastal path was quite spectacular.

We didn't try out the spa other than the heated sea water swimming pool but it looked to have every single therapy under the sun available. - a covered walk way links the hotel and the spa and again, all the staff were excellent.

A brilliant end of holiday stay and we are now looking at visiting the island for longer next summer. We spent more than we planned but worth every penny and very good value.

“Clean and practical but soulless”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2007

We stayed here for three nights before flying back from La Rochelle (so close - about a 10 minute drive to the airport from the southern tip of the island)

The hotel is fine but I cannot get too excited about it.

It's on the coast next to a vineyard but there was no appreciable beach. It is modern and clean and you get the impression that it does a lot of corporate functions.

The room was as you would expect for a typical business traveller - not luxurious but perfectly acceptable. The staff were helpful. There is a seafood restaurant which seemed nice but quite formal. Not cheap. We didn't eat there but had a snack at the bar in the spa part of the hotel which was OK. The spa is joined by a tunnel to the hotel. We didn't try the spa but apparently lots of famous French people did as there were signed photos of them all the way down the corridor (not sure I would have stayed there if I was a rich celeb),

Problem is that it's just bland and out of the way. It's about 2km to Sainte Marie and there is nothing else around. Had I known I would much rather have booked into a hotel in a town or village where you get some of the atmosphere and have somewhere to walk to.

Ile de Re is absolutely lovely. The towns and villages are beautiful and there are plenty of lovely restaurants to eat in (avoid the touristy ones for dinner if you are looking for something special). We had a lovely dinner in Ars en Re at the other other of the island - the restaurant almost on the corner of the harbour just before you go round the corner to the car parking area- very good fish and fantastic live jazz.

Beaches are lovely too. Clean sand but can be windy as it's the Atlantic coast. Hire a bike if you get a chance - very bicycle friendly.

Next time, I'll book into somewhere with a bit more character.

“Fantastic hotel”

Stayed here for a week in a prestige room overlooking the vineyard. Wow, what a view. Very relaxed hotel, restaurant very good - a conservatory setting overlooking the sea.
