“Knitted wallpaper?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2010

A few hundred metres form the centre of town the hotel has its own car park and an immensely friendly owner who was warm and obliging. The rooms and hotel itself were clean and comfortable and there was a plentiful supply of hot water, always useful for a long bath after a lot of walking. We had a room at the top of the hotel with both bath and shower and the most unusual knitted (it seemed) wallpaper on the walls, whereas those in the bedroom (and the ceiling and doors) were papered in a nice chambrai fabric. Well it was different. The downside was the rather spartan breakfast which could have been improved upon: croissants, bread, ham, cheese, yoghurt, fruit and cereals (2) were OK and you could have had more but there was something a little on the cheap side about it and if you were paying the 9 Euros (we didn't as we were on B&B) you might feel cheated. But it's a minor quibble and doesn't detract overly. The church bells were, well, bell-like but you get used to them. St Vaast itself is a working fishing port and close to the invasion beaches and the sights of Normandy and thus is a pretty good base. For eating there are fair few to choose from. La Chasse Maree was about the best of the bunch with reasonable prices and good food; la Marine was a bit overpriced for what you got and the service wasn't up to la CM. The Fuschia at the hotel France was very overpriced with attention to style rather than substance. The others appeared to be a mixed bag. But prices are rising in France and although still enjoyable it's starting to get less value for money than it was. But not a bad hotel and not a bad night's sleep, bells notwithstanding.

“Second visit - Just as lovely out of season!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2009

We decided on a last minute autumn break and got a great deal with Brittany Ferries so went in mid-October. Our second visit to "La Granitiere" did not disappoint! Jean-Paul welcomed us like old friends and we had our lovely front balcony room again. The weather was so good we were even able to sit out in the afternoons. The addition of wi-fi since our first visit meant we could use the laptop, but there is a computer in the lounge if you need one. There is no need for tea and coffee making in the rooms as Jean-Paul is the perfect host and will make you anything you want when you want it. As we eat our main meal at midday, we like to have a cup of hot chocolate with either a pastry (from the excellent Patisserie in the village) or bread and cheese in the evening. We had our cosy little repast every evening in the lounge with a jug of lovely chocolate and as much conversation as we liked from our fantastic host. As it was a chill-out break rather than a major sightseeing trip we tended to stay around the area not venturing too far afield and we discovered new bits of St Vaast we had not seen before, along the shore to La Hougue. Even out of season it is a very busy shoreline with lots of locals out and about and the oyster beds visible at low tide, with plenty of shells to collect. At high tide it takes on a completely different character with the waves crashing over the wall. As the mussels were out of season we tended towards the local beef and fish and were not disappointed once. We had excellent meals at the Marina Restaurant and "La Bisquine" in St Vaast, and in Briquebec at "Le Donjon", opposite the castle. And in beautiful Barfleur, try eating upstairs overlooking the harbour at "Restaurant Comptoir de la Presqu'ile", and don't miss the home made apple pie with pear sorbet! The best bit about this whole area is that there are no parking charges or traffic wardens, so you can take your time and relax while eating and shopping. For the best regional biscuits we visited the "Maison du Biscuit" near Briquebec, but also had a very pleasant "find" locally with the "Biscuiterie de Quineville", a delightful family business just down the coast from St Vaast. "Maison Gosselin" again made a large hole in the budget with their excellent offerings, and this year's purchases even included a small rocking horse for our new granddaughter! It really is an amazing shop with a huge array of quality food and gift items, many locally produced, in quite a small space and very pleasant staff who go out of their way to give good service. If you are travelling by ferry and have time to waste on the way back to Cherbourg, take the coast road to Barfleur and then on around to Gatteville and beyond. It is a very pretty route, and if time allows go beyond Cherbourg to the viewpoint at Landemer for some stunning views. For a nice meal before sailing can thoroughly recommend the restaurant at the "Cite de Mer" in the old Queen Mary Terminal right next to the ferry port, where they serve an excellent entrecote steak! This area and this hotel in particular is somewhere we would return to time and time again given the chance!

“An excellent place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2009

We spent three nights here and had a wonderfully relaxing break. The owner works hard to ensure that guests feel welcome and have everything they need for a comfortable stay. He is very friendly and always happy to chat in English or French.
Our room and bathroom were large and beautifully decorated and very quiet. The buffet breakfast offered a good choice with as much food/coffee/tea as we wanted.
St Vaast is a pleasant place to stay and La Granitiere is conveniently situated for restaurants, cafes, shops, the marina and fishing port. It is within easy reach of the D-day beaches and it is also possible to travel farther afield to Bayeux, for example.

“Fun Stay in Normandy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2009

My husband and I and another couple stayed there for 3 nights in June . We got lost leaving CDG airport and took the really long route. We called the owner Jean-Paul and he could not have been nicer. He suggested we find dinner as it was 9:00PM so we stopped at Bayeux. We arrived at midnight and Jean-Paul was not only awake, he also was smiling and helped carry our bags up to the 2nd floor. Our rooms were a good size as were the bathrooms and they were decorated with French furniture and wall papers. In the morning we met Jean-Paul and found out what a fun happy person he is with a sense of humor, too. He gave us directions and helped us make dinner reservations at Chaise Mairie and at Bisquine and told us about a street market open one morning that we walked to and enjoyed. He loaned me a hair dryer which made life easy. Our rooms were clean and quiet and a great place to tour Normandy from. The room alone was nice but Jean-Paul made it fun and chatting with others at breakfast was enjoyable too. YES! We would return and advise others to stay at this pretty place.
