A few hundred metres form the centre of town the hotel has its own car park and an immensely friendly owner who was warm and obliging. The rooms and hotel itself were clean and comfortable and there was a plentiful supply of hot water, always useful for a long bath after a lot of walking. We had a room at the top of the hotel with both bath and shower and the most unusual knitted (it seemed) wallpaper on the walls, whereas those in the bedroom (and the ceiling and doors) were papered in a nice chambrai fabric. Well it was different. The downside was the rather spartan breakfast which could have been improved upon: croissants, bread, ham, cheese, yoghurt, fruit and cereals (2) were OK and you could have had more but there was something a little on the cheap side about it and if you were paying the 9 Euros (we didn't as we were on B&B) you might feel cheated. But it's a minor quibble and doesn't detract overly. The church bells were, well, bell-like but you get used to them. St Vaast itself is a working fishing port and close to the invasion beaches and the sights of Normandy and thus is a pretty good base. For eating there are fair few to choose from. La Chasse Maree was about the best of the bunch with reasonable prices and good food; la Marine was a bit overpriced for what you got and the service wasn't up to la CM. The Fuschia at the hotel France was very overpriced with attention to style rather than substance. The others appeared to be a mixed bag. But prices are rising in France and although still enjoyable it's starting to get less value for money than it was. But not a bad hotel and not a bad night's sleep, bells notwithstanding.
