I've been visiting St. Vaast for many years, and I love the place. Last year, I persuaded my wife to come with me and find out what all the fuss was about. On that occasion we stayed at the Hotel de France, which we enjoyed. But there is one other hotel in the town, so this time we thought we'd try La Granitiere instead.
The reviews here on TripAdvisor were promising, so I booked online via booking.com.
On arrival, the owner made a bit of a point out of the fact that I had booked online, but burst into laughter as he delighted in telling us that we had the smallest room in the hotel. He then proceeded to explain the rate list displayed on the wall to demonstrate just what skinflints we were for choosing the cheapest price.
More laughter as he explained that it was a long walk up to the garret that was our room. On the way up, we had to stop off to be shown a 'real' room of the sort booked by people who weren't quite so tight!
More laughter again as he showed us a perfectly adequate room that frankly wasn't that different from the superior one demonstrated earlier.
The only downside to the hotel and its room was the noise from a water tank valve somewhere nearby, which sounded rather like snoring!
So in summary: nice hotel, clean and convenient (can't comment about the breakfast, because we didn't take it, but the breakfast room is very nicely decorated)... shame about a proprietor who thinks it's OK to take the **** out of his guests.
It'll be back to the Hotel de France for us on or next visit later this year.
Room Tip: Maybe phone the hotel direct, rather than using an online agency. No language problem.
