We stayed 4 nights at the Tropicana in March 2011 and were very satisfied by what the hotel had to offer. Rooms were spacious, clean and nicely decorated. The hotel area was located in what looked like a jungle park. Sure it is not close to many restaurants and shopping but the restaurant at the hotel was excellent and the sunset bar was cosy so as long as you are only staying a few days no problem there. The only downside was that they charged extra for internet in the business center and that the hotel lacked a functional system for occupying beach and pool chairs. Unfortunately during our stay self-centered hotelguests "booked" all sunchairs by placing out towels. By the time we came to eat breakfast all the good seats had been "booked".

My wife and I just returned from six days and five nights on Koh Chang. Our stay at the Tropicana Beach Resort was really great. The room, located in a two-unit bungalow on the older side of the resort and relatively close to the sea, was spacious and extremely comfortable. The setting was a well-manicured tropical garden. Food: the breakfast buffet was excellent, with many choices and everything well-prepared. Other meals ranged from quite acceptable to very good. In comparison, we had dinner at two other nearby hotels on the beach, and either the food was dreadful or the management was "tricky" in practicing deceptive advertising for dinner prices, happy hour, etc. Pools: a couple of days were spent in this large, not-overly-crowded pool as we got used to snorkeling again in preparation for a day's adventure on the sea. The splash pool was very clean and quite pleasant. The more popular pool by the sea, while quite picturesque, is more appropriate for a quick cool-off dip while sun-bathing. The beach in front of the hotel was cleaned daily by hotel staff. A few words about swimming in the sea near the main island--hotels have NO sewage treatment facilities. Raw sewage is piped out into the sea. At least the rocks in front of this hotel are not covered in "green fur" which is the case in front of a number of resorts on the island.

All in all, our stay was comfortable and extremely enjoyable.

Tropicana is a very good choice if you are on a family holiday. Our children aged 6 and 9 loved Tropicana.

There are two pools - one a big splash pool. There are a couple of pleasant activities for children, playground and good opportunities to fish and play in the water.
The rooms are great and the suites are houge enough for a family at 5 or 6! Tropicana is a big resort and there might be cramped in the hotel's private beach.

The garden is very big, and pretty at the evenings.

Avoid placing the rooms around the splash pool, and select another restaurant in the evening if you want to avoid shows. When is the restaurant at Barali beside a better choice.

We alto stayed at Barali resort next door, which is a much better choice if you are without children.

The village Klong Prao is a nice little town at center on the coast. Here are 20 different restaurants, 2 elephant places, a hospital, a clinic with a good English speaking doctor, good masseurs and not much more. One of the most relaxed towns on the island.

We stayed a week at the Tropicana resort and had a great week. This was our first trip to Koh Chang so we don't have much to compare with but I would classify it as an ok/good mid-class resort with a good pool and good beach. We stayed in a second floor suite which was very spacious and clean and the children each had their own bed.

Our children - 4 and 6 years old - loved the pool and the beach (for us adults a less shallow beach would have been preferred) There is small channel that goes out next to the resort that is exciting for the children to play at, just beware of current when the tide comes and goes + there are some obstacles on the bottom to look out for. The kids can paint plaster figurines by the beach and there are also kayaks, ping pong and darts available. Staff is friendly and helpful but the resort is too big/too much staff to really get to know any of them.

There are lots of beach chairs and some pool chairs, would be enough for all guests but unfortunately the hotel (as many hotels) allow reservation of chairs so this means almost all chairs are already taken by the time you get to breakfast and half of them remains reserved but unused during the day. There is sort of a a remedy however in the fold away sun chairs that are available. We would usually find a single pool or beach chair and add a fold away chair and we would be ok without having to get up with the rest of the crowd to reserve chairs at sunup.

Other resorts and restaurants are close by, just a few minutes of walking on the beach or up to the street. On the street there is the usual - laundry by the kilo (at resort laundry is by item), a 7 eleven, dive centers, travel agents but no shopping.
