“Place to Sleep”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2011

The hotel was OK - but - i thought it was expensive for what you received. The worst of all things was the smoke detector was missing from the ceiling... when i ask about it - they said that it was off being repaired and since it was the weekend, they could not replace - very troublesome... Continental breakfast did not have much to offer. The room was clean, carpet was so-so, bathroom shower curtain had issues keeping it closed - rod was hung wrong.

“Slimey manager and shabby rooms”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2010
1
person found this review helpful

Manager had no handicapped rooms and refused to substitute a higher priced room on first floor for anything less than 50% more. Only relented when handicapped person nearly fell down stairs while trying to reach second floor (no elevator). Rooms were dated and shabby. Nonsmoking had been smoked in recently. Avoid this place like the plague!!!

“Not bad at all. I got what I payed for, really.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2010

At first, I was skeptical especially after reading all of these reviews. I was in Midlo visiting my girlfriend, and this was the cheapest place to stay. I got in around 6 in the morning and was greeted by a beautiful lobby and Mike at the front counter who took my card promptly and was very friendly. He told me I could come back at noon and they'd have a room ready for me and surely enough, they did.

The room was beautiful; lots of space, very clean and well-maintained, nice TV, working fridge and microwave, all the standard amenities I needed. The only things that were really wrong I suppose were a few minute things in the bathroom; the lack of toilet paper on the roll upon arrival (but there was a full backup roll right behind it), the small crack in the marble on the sink, a small grayish stain on the floor of the shower, and the fact that the bathroom was kind of a steam trap and left condensation on everything unless you left the door open. Also, the mattress cover tended to come off rather easily, but we only had that problem once. Like I said, little itty bitty things that didn't really make any difference to me and didn't have a huge impact on my stay.

The location is wonderful, right on Hull Street and minutes from all kinds of restaurants, stores, a movie theater and only a half hour from Richmond.

The breakfast was great. Belgian waffles, cereal, toast and bagels, juice, milk and coffee. Nothing extravagant, but hey, it's free and more than enough to get you off your feet and into the day without an empty stomach. The only small problem with it was it ran from 6-9, so if you sleep in you're gonna miss it. There's no room service but they have numbers for Domino's and other local places that deliver more than just pizza, so good food is just a phone call away. There's also Hardee's, Wendy's and Taco Bell within walking distance.

Another thing I liked was the TV in the room... I'm kind of a nerd and brought my Wii with me in hopes that I could plug it in and play games with my girlfriend while we weren't out and about, and low and behold the TV had no input locks and my game system worked wonderfully on it. This is pretty great if you're bringing kids along since this location doesn't have a pool or a game room or anything. Also, the free Wi-Fi was blazing fast and gave me no problems at for simple browsing such as Facebook or ordering a pizza.

I didn't have housekeeping all weekend since I didn't really need it and left my Do Not Disturb tag on my door during my entire stay, but they called on the first day to see if I needed anything for my room, which was really nice of them and really shows that they care about their customers.

Checking out was a breeze as well, even when I had to check out a night early. I was provided with a detailed bill with my rewards points and everything on it, the man at the front desk (Mike) went over it with me in detail and made sure any questions I had were answered, and bid me safe travels back to NY as I left.

Overall, everything was great. This isn't a 5-star place, but for what you pay for, you get some truly awesome service and everything you need. I was pleasantly impressed and very pleased with this Super 8.

“Don't stay here... entropy running rampant, surly staff”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2009

I stayed here for one night while helping a friend relocate after the beds in her house were packed up by the movers. I was going to get the free continental breakfast, then drive her extra car and dogs to their new home several states away. My expectations were minimal, but this hotel did not meet even them. The woman on duty at the desk at check-in was almost a comic character, so unfriendly and stone-faced was she. When I protested being put in a smoking room, she insisted that is what I had reserved, which is patently absurd. She glared at me accusingly and with great disgust changed the room assignment. The lobby was hot and smelled of tobacco. A/C repair trucks were on the premises for hours, but the temperature stayed the same. In my room, a used wash cloth was hanging from the shower curtain rod, the toilet seat was at right angles to the fixture, attached by only one fastener. The shrubbery was so overgrown probably a third of my first floor window was obscured.

The continental breakfast was horrible. The deserted room was dark (half the fixtures were burned out apparently) and hot, no one was in attendance at 8 am, the one juice pitcher was emply, coffee was weak and tepid, the bagels were OK, but the only thing to put on them was some kind of artificial butter spread. There was one toaster and only half the slots worked. There were two cereal choices, but I was afraid to use the milk in the carafe. The place was so depressing and seedy I thought the milk might be adulterated by some disgruntled employee, although on second thought, I got the impression there probably weren't any: Mom and Pop on the desk and daughter cleaning rooms. When I tried to check-out at 8:30, no one came in response to the bell. After more than 5 minutes, a man appeared with shaving cream on his face. He accepted the key but did not give a receipt or even an apology for tardiness. He waved to where others had left room keys, and his attitude was of annoyance. Guess my friend will have to check her credit card statement to verify the charges.

My belief is that this hotel was probably good at one time, but that since the people I saw have been running it, nothing beyond the bare minimum has been done. They should lose the franchise. AAA should scrape their sticker off the door. Not recommended.
