My son is a student at James Madison University and, when taking him to school, or visiting, I have stayed at the Jameson Inn, the Hampton Inn, The Sleep Inn, and the Ramada. Although the Hampton was really nice, I typically can't afford it and must use my husband's Hilton Honors points. But this time, I wanted the comfort of a 3 diamond (per Priceline.com's rating scale) hotel, so I bid on a "3" and got the Holiday Inn for $60/night. I was really excited!
The excitement turned to disappointment as soon as I overshot the entrance to the long strange street that leads past another hotel, and meanders around; not easy to find the Holiday Inn even with a navigation device. I checked into the hotel and was assigned to room 205. When I left the lobby area of the Holiday Inn to take the elevator to the 2nd floor, there was a big leak to the left of the elevator coming from the ice machine. Room 205 had 2 double beds, an old tv (not a flat screen like Hampton) and the halls smelled like smoke that seeped into the room from the old and dingy hallway. I needed ice so I moseyed down the hall to find that the 2nd floor ice machine was broken; I had to take the stairs and get the ice from the leaky first floor machine. The restaurant was closed with a handwritten sign. The bar was empty. The bed was old and uncomfortable. Thumbs up for free internet access though. Overall, I think the 3 diamond rating should be realistically downgraded to a 2 diamond to more accurately portray the quality of this hotel.
