“Old, bare-bones, way too expensive”

I didn't book a room here expecting five-star luxury, just a nice place to relax and enjoy the scenery. But for the price, I imagined there would be at least standard amenities in the rooms (other than TV and WiFi, which they explicitly state that they don't have). But the room did not even offer a hairdryer. I'm not sure if the desk would have provided one had I asked, but I wasn't about to trudge outside to the main lodge in 35-degree weather with wet hair (no phones). However, it didn't really matter, as there was no outlet in the bathroom anyway.

The bathroom fixtures were severely dated and not that clean; the baseboard heater was adequately powered but clicked near-constantly the whole night. The lounge and restaurant both close before 9 PM, so bring a book or go to bed early!

I'll give this a '2', however, because the restaurant served a very good breakfast (order from the menu - the buffet is overpriced), and there really are otters living in the lake. They put on a nice show at breakfast!

“Old school motel”

My daughter thought this would be the highlight of our 10 day road trip. One look at the cinder block walls and realizing there was no phone or TV in the room quickly dispelled her of that notion. The next morning when she further realized that there was no hairdryer which meant she could not shower and wash her hair just was the kiss of death. We had dinner in the lodge. It was Friday and the big seafood buffet night. However, at $28, the buffet was not worth it. From the menu, I selected prime rib which was not bad. The side of fried okra was really fantastic. My daughter was not happy to order fried chicken, but it really was delicious. Not a great wine list, so we ordered a Virginia wine from Williamsburg winery which was pretty good. Another plus was that the coffee was excellent. The wait staff that night and the next morning for breakfast were good. The best thing about Peaks of Otter Lodge is the location on a mountain "lake" (a pond, really). At breakfast we were delighted to watch otters swimming and playing in the lake - a first for us.

“Lots of Potential-----Overall Not Too Bad”

I thought the pictures of the lodge looked great. I was looking forward to staying here.

When we inspected the room after checking in, my wife looked at the bed and noticed the sheets appeared to be used by someone with a bloody nose and had not been changed. There was no way we were sleeping on that, so we reported it to the front desk.

The front desk acted with a sense of urgency, and told us that the problem would be resolved as soon as we returned from dinner.

They made good on the promise, and we had fresh linens on the bed by the time we returned.

The room itself was spacious---somewhat old judging from some of the outdated features in the bathroom (i.e. a slot in the wall to put used razor blades), but I enjoy that nostalgic stuff.
Beds were fine, and we had a porch that overlooks the lake.

Staff was great----both at the front desk and in the restaurant. Meals were decent portions and good value. Don't expect an extensive wine or beer list.

The walls are kind of thin. I had no problem hearing every word of a conversation in the adjoining room despite my best attempts to tune it out. There is also some construction going on nearby, and they get the bulldozers started at 6:30 am sharp.

Nice walk around the lake. Absent a few items, this is a good stop along the Blue Ridge Pkway.

“Lakeside Serenity”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2011

We enjoyed only one night at Peaks of Otter on our trip south on Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Do not book this accommodation expecting 5 star comfort as it is the surroundings, the serenity and the pure beauty of nature that will make it an experience you will not forget. No interruptions from electronic frivolities. Take a deep breath, purchase a few novelty beers from the bar and sit by the lake and enjoy a lakeside serenity that will provide the reality check we all need. Prices in the restaurant are very reasonable and the staff is attentive and accommodating. We enjoyed a late autumn stay and the colors and weather did not disappoint, plus we virtually had the Parkway to ourselves! Enjoy a basic, back to nature experience.

Room Tip: Lower level rooms allow you to walkout directly to the lake front while upper levels require walking...

“Stay for the location, experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

Simple but comfortable lodge on serene lake in the mountains. If driving the BRP do not miss. Gorgeous in the fall. Rooms basic and stark, not romantic, but you come for the location. Get up early and walk the lake. Good restaurant. Highly recommended. It is what it is. Were fortunate to get mid Oct cancellation. Very glad we had the opportunity.
