My wife and I recently stayed at this Inn. It has been our second stay. The first time was with the previous owners and this time with the current owners. Our first stay was during the summer and this stay was during the winter.
We have stayed at many inns over the years in the States and in Europe. We are a late thirties couple and as much as we enjoy adventure travel we also enjoy the charm and coziness inns afford. Both times we stayed at this inn we were looking to just get a break from the multi direction pull of everyday life and it gave us just that. The summer stay was enjoyed relaxing by the pool or on the deck area some of the back rooms have. We also did a nearby hike to take in some of the surroundings. The pool area is not large, however it is not small either. If everybody staying on a weekend filled the area it couldn’t hold everybody. However, inns being a place to base from, most people are out seeing the sights leaving only a few book readers to chill by the water and therefore the pool area is just the right size. Our summer stay was in one of the third floor smaller rooms. It was very clean and comfortable with a back door leading to a deck. The deck area is not totally private as it connects to other rooms sharing the area. However it is large enough and designed to give a semi private feel. Some second and third floor rooms have access to the multilevel deck.
During our winter stay we stayed in a larger second floor room; plenty spacious with a gas fireplace. It also had a back deck which in the summer would be a nice place, but at 20 degrees and covered with snow it was pretty to look at from the inside during our stay. The bathroom with jetted tub was also very clean and comfortable. During the stay the innkeepers had at least one fire going during the day and one night had all three going. They are also more than willing to light one if requested. Being a New Englander, a cold fireplace or one filled with candles in the winter is a huge no-no in my book. A cozy fire is always a welcome sight especially for an inn. If you ski or ride, Mount Snow is very close and the inn will run some ski and stay lift ticket deals that you can check their website for. If you don’t do a package they are willing to pick up some tickets for you to save you a trip to the ticket window. We stayed in the same room a previous reviewer mentioned was very loud being located next to the second floor common area. This was not a problem during our stay. I can see how there is the possibility, but this would require a noisy crew in the game/reading/common area. Odds are not probable for that to be the case. You can hear people through the door going by on their way to the first floor, but unless you have a migraine headache and need total silence all day, will be sleeping though breakfast or jump at the sound of a pin drop it should not be an issue.
The new Innkeepers work very hard to make the stay enjoyable. They seem ready to jump at any request a guest may have. As they are relatively new I do hope they stay this way and not succumb to the tires of owning an inn. Their dog Sophie is very enjoyable as well.
The dining area is comfortable. One section of the dining room has a fireplace so you can have a fireside meal in the winter - real wood burning not gas. There is coffee, tea and sometimes hot cider available in the afternoons in the winter. The menu for the evening dinner offers a good selection. Some selections change nightly. Between our two stays this is the only area that has declined. I’ll be the first to admit one meal can’t be the final answer to how good a preparation the kitchen can serve. However, the one dinner we had during our previous stay with Chef and co-owner Michael Allen was an outstanding rival to some of Boston’s finest restaurants. He offered an assortment of amazing homemade breads and delectable preparations that were technical and beautiful. His breakfast was also a treat and hearty. The new offerings from the kitchen are down a couple notches, not bad by any means, just not as good as before. Where I would have said when recommending staying at the inn that a friend must reserve at least one dinner while staying, I might now say it’s an option. The dinner pricing is the higher side of moderate. The current breakfast offers a good selection and the portions are just right.
There is a very small bar area. If you’re traveling with another couple the four of you would fill the space. However, that’s not a bad thing to just enjoy a dink and some conversation.
As of the date of this review if you are looking for a clean, comfortable place to stay with charm this should definitely be on your list. Choose the right time of the season and you might have the inn to yourself for a night. Or if you like kicking back and enjoying conversation with other guests there certainly is the times of seasons for that as well
