“room was hot, stuffy and musty smelling”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

This place really needs an overhaul. I made reservations through the Mt. Snow hotline and, since we only wanted to stay one weekend night, the options were more limted (most places require a 2 night minimum on the weekends). The phone rep indicated that it was nice. The property is very dated. We went straight to Mt Snow for some afternoon tubing and arrived there around 6pm. Upon arrival, the reception was luke warm at best. The reception office was a mess - very cluttered and not the best first impression. The room was down a narrow hallway. We stayed on the ground level and it smelled very musty. We like the room pretty cool to sleep and the room was warm and stuffy, and the window was not easily opened to let in some fresh cool air. The furniture was of low quality. They did serve breakfast in the morning, but it was also not of good quality - frozen french toast, McDonald's-style hashbrowns. They do have a ping pong table and pool table that we didn't discover until we went to breakfast -- had the woman at reception told us about it when we arrived, the kids may have had a chance to enjoy. If I were you, I'd keep driving....

“Could be so much nicer”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

We stayed here with another family over new years weekend. The rooms are in serious need of renovating. Wall to wall dingy carpet. Tiny bathroom with a shower stall. The mattresses are old, dingy, and stained. We were totally grossed out by the accomodations. We were met by staff that seemed annoyed we had children with us. And the breakfast was so unedible that we actually paid for breakfast at the diner the 2nd and 3rd mornings of our stay.
The owners should consider cleaning up the rooms and offering a higher quality breakfast if they want return customers. The location was excellent and some nice restaurants nearby. Also we had a blast hanging out in the BYOB tavern room new years eve. Clean it up and you will fill it up!!!!

“Allergic reactions I've never had before...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

My husband and I stayed at the Red Oak Inn over New Years and we were very disappointed. I had an allergic reaction to the pillows (and possibly the rugs as they were very stained and looked dirty) and had to put a t-shirt over the pillow in order to sleep. And I normally don't have allergic reactions to anything! I felt I was intruding on the owner and staff when asking for more towels for the room. Furniture in the common areas needs updating as they looked old and stained and not very inviting. The place has great potential but needs some TLC - especially the bathroom at least in our room. The breakfast was the most disappointing of all. Year old bread (if you are going to freeze bread to use at later date...don't put it out in the original bag!), powdered eggs, and way overcooked sausage awaited us for breakfast. The owners son did light the fire for us and was very friendly.

“If you have allergies stay away...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

Our stay at the Red Oak Inn was very dissapointing. The place is in desparate need of renovation and so is all the decor. The carpeting throughout the place was worn and stained which disgusted us.The guest rooms had old high pile carpeting and there was no way to control the heat in our room nor the temperature in the shower. So our room was extremely hot and our friends room was cold. Our shower had great water pressure but unfortunately the shower had to be hot or cold as there was no in between. Our allergies were off the hook at night in our room(pet free). The breakfast was not good. The hot food was greasy and overdone- waiting in chafing dishes. The scrambled eggs were powdered. Unfortunately the people working there(assume they were owners) were unfriendly and seemed annoyed that we were there invading their living space. There was never a smile nor a pleasant conversation to be had and they seemed to aviod interaction with guests.
This place could have great potential as it is a large place with family friendly suites. The game room would be a homerun for families but the staff seemed irritated when kids would go in there as it was intruding on their card playing and lounging in the adjacent room. There were 2-3 young ladies(owners adult daughters?) and as we have experienced in other inns, they could have made some money with babysitting and kids activities. Had there been clean carpeting or no carpeting, staff who were friendly and inviting, and a real made-to order country vermont breakfast, we could have overlooked the old furniture etc.
Overall depressed and withdrawn demeanor of female staff made us feel uncomfortable and not welcome. I actually feel badly writing this review as I'm sure its not easy or profitable operating an inn in that condition. A smile or a kind word would have gone a long way though.

“We will go again!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

We stayed two nights last winter with three kids. The "family suite" with two bedrooms and five beds was perfect for us and a great value. The rooms were small but clean and comfortable warm considering the single digit outdoor temp. Bed was comfortable. We played games in the living room and unfortunately watched the Patriots lose to the Jets. The kids used the game room ( ping pong, etc.) and a couple of us used the indoor hot tub - clean but stuffy, humid tub room. Everyone including all three kids liked the breakfast buffet which is an accomplishment. It was fresh and plentiful. Figuring in the added value of breakfast makes this even a better value.
The staff was "stoic", not unfriendly, but not a typical bed and breakfast inn "feeling."
We skied two days at Mt. Snow which is quite close. Considering the price of ski country accomodations, this was a fun place, a comfortable place and a great value. This place beats the typical chain hotel/motel for comfort, fun and breakfast quality.
Everyone agreed that this was a place very much worth returning to this year.

Room Tip: Family suite perfect for a family of 4-5
