“Lovely with a few surprises........”

My husband and I visited the Hermitage Inn in July 2011. We were in the room named Coldbrook in the Wine Wing. The room was exceptionally attractive, and very nicely decorated. We ate in the dining room, and this was a pleasant experience, but very pricey. We did not give that a second try.
At the check in desk we were not told that breakfast was included. That was the first omission. On the second day our room was not cleaned when we arrived back at 4:00 p.m. and I made the bed, but did inform the desk. No towels etc. were offered, and when I asked for more coffee for the Keurig machine I was told "We are a little low on those." The staff in general were very pleasant, but never seemed to have answers to questions especially those regarding the local area.
What we were most surprised at was the 20 percent service charge added to the price of the room and given to us at check out. On a room that was $245, adding another almost $50 was a shock. The local tax is to be expected. I have racked my brains to remember when this was the case in any b and b and cannot recall a time ever. Of course the 20 percent was added to the room rate for the day it was not serviced too.
The grounds were just lovely, with walking trails just off the property, and the outside fire was very enjoyable.

Room Tip: The rooms in the original house may be a little noisy, and this was told to us by other guests. Whe...

“AWESOME, UNBELIEVABLE, FANTASTIC”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2011

We had a wedding and our bridal party stayed at all the rooms. First the rooms are gorgeous with sumptuous beds, woodsy vermont style decorations. The grounds are gorgeous with paths and flowers. The ponds, jacuzzi and common spaces are just what you are looking for. The real thrill is the STAFF, everyone is friendly and helpful and the FOOD is outstanding. Previously, we often had come to have a great dinner or relax in the pub but this was our first large event. The event was beyond our wildest dreams. The dining room looked like an enchanted vermont wonderland. Everything was delicious. Anyone looking for a location to hold a truly special event will find it at the Hermitage!

“Upscale Inn”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2011

We stayed here for 2 nights to start off our Honeymoon and, despite a rocky start, we were overall happy with our stay and would recommend as an upscale beautiful inn.

We stayed in the Bridgeview room in the Carriage House and were the only ones staying in the house, which meant we had a full kitchen, dining room, and living area to ourselves. The house was built in 2008 and was well decorated and with high quality appliances and items. I would describe it as modern rural comfort, as opposed to antique charm of many inns/B&Bs. Soft pillowtop bed with high quality linens and towels. Jacuzzi in the bathroom, two sinks, nice shower with great water pressure. There was a hot tub right outside, but it had to be emptied after the previous guests poured beer in it, and it never got hot enough for us to use it. Note that there is construction on new structures and heavy trucks pass by the house, so if sleeping late is important to you, you may want to choose the Inn or Wine Wing as opposed to Carriage House.

The grounds were beautiful, and we had a blast when Ben, the maintenance guy, guided us on ATVs on the property's many trails (at no extra cost). The meals were overall excellent -- particularly the quail and salad for dinner in the pub (burger was just ok), and the eggs benedict and french toast for breakfast. The staff was generally friendly and attentive, and the Inn clearly has invested a lot of money to establish itself as a top quality inn.

That all being said, there is room for improvement:
- The cooling/fan unit is right below the floor of the Bridgeview room (actually hangs from it), and when on it vibrates the entire room. I reported this, and we were able to turn off the unit until they get it fixed.
- There were flies and gnats in Carriage House that were somewhat annoying.
- The wireless did not work at first and it took a day and two calls for it to work.
- There was no corkscrew for our wine, which was unfortunate given the fully stocked kitchen. Reception was not sure it had a corkscrew, and then one of their staff members said they might have to bring over just a screw. They finally found a corkscrew (not a good one) and brought it over. By that point, our dinner was cold. Not a great start to our stay.
- There was no microwave. Bizarre not to have a microwave, yet have a dishwasher, stove, and oven.
- Other annoyances with the kitchen were that the refrigerator had not been cleaned, there were no paper towels, and the pots had no lids.
- The bathroom light had a high-pitched sound when on.
- The bathroom sinks too easily splashed everywhere.
- No soap dish or ledge in the shower for soap, shampoo, etc., so have to lean down to the ground.

Overall, a great inn and we would recommend. I would just strongly recommend that they take care of more details as I suggest above, since they've already invested a lot in the property.

“Loved it!! Already booked another trip to go back.”

The Hermitage exceeded my expectations in all areas: beauty of location, quality of room, friendliness of staff, quality and selection of restaurants, and available activities. I've already booked another trip back.

Short descriptions of the above areas:
- beauty of location can't be beat. the Hermitage has tons of lands all for you to explore. we took various trails, ran nearby and never got bored just looking around us. we went in Aug-Sept timing but I can't imagine how beautiful it would be in the Fall or Winter
- quality of room: we stayed in a room in the carriage house and it was amazing. it was all renovated within the last 2-3 years and very modern. the room exceeded my expectations and was exceedingly comfortable
- friendliness of the staff: the staff was amazing from helping me select the right room, find activities on the property in the area and nearby, and most of all offering to pick us up in Hurricane Irene
- selection of restaurants: there are 2 restaurants on-site, a pub-like restaurant and formal dining room, both had plenty of selection and delicious food! the chef uses food from the garden on-site and local, fresh ingredients. if you need a break from the inn or want to do some exploring there are more restaurants and a market a couple of miles away
- available activities: we never got bored ... we worked out in the clean, recently renovated gym, hiked, ran, and just played outside. there is even more you can do like fish in the pond or in the winter ski

Room Tip: the carriage house was great, speak to the Inn to see what would work for you

“Welcoming and delightful.....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2011

The Hermitage Inn is a wonderful B&B. They were very accomodating when I made my reservation and welcoming when we arrived. Our room (Willows) was totally charming and clean ....it exceeded our expectations. The grounds are beautiful with many flowers and a pond. There is also a hot tub, sauna, and exercise room which we didn't get a chance to use, but we did have a great time playing pool in the game room. My ONLY complaint is that we felt rushed at dinner. We sat in the pub and our waitress took both our drink and dinner orders. The meal was served after only a few minutes.....before our martinis (which we had to ask about). But the food was delicious, as were the cosmos :) I would suggest that you order drinks first, and the meal when they arrive.
The next morning we had an exquisite breakfast with juice, muffins, and omelets of our choice. The Hermitage is a everything you hope for in a B&B. Highly recommended!!!
