“Reasonable rates, clean rooms, amenities leave a lot to be desired”

I've stayed at the Best Western in Waterbury a few times over the past few years and have found the rooms to be clean and pretty well kept up, if somewhat small. It's basically a decent place to sleep and not much more.

There's an indoor pool that's pretty neat to swim in especially in winter since it's surrounded by glass walls, allowing a view of snow just feet away.

Here are a few problems, though, that I recently encountered: the restaurant was highly touted when I checked in, but when I tried it it turned out that they had insufficient staff; only two (albeit hard working) wait people to cover the restaurant and room service. It took about three-quarters of an hour to be served after being seated--and that was after a half-hour wait. Then it turned out they were out of my first selection for an entree; my second choice turned out to be barely edible. It was also pricey for what I received. An accompanying family member barely touched her dish.

I found that the game room had broken equipment, but learned that only after losing money in the machines. Despite notifying the front desk about the problem, the machines were still broken later in the week; no signs were posted warning other patrons.

One morning I put up the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door while at breakfast. I took down the sign after breakfast and then went out for the day. When I came back that evening, the room had not been cleaned. That wasn't so big a deal (although the rate paid that night had risen to $170), but it irritated me when the front desk explained that if housecleaning sees the "Do Not Disturb" sign they don't come back. Really? I've never seen that happen before and I've stayed at a lot of hotels. I think they simply forgot to come back--mistakes happen, after all--and the front desk was just coming up with excuses.

I've found that by and large the staff is friendly and helpful. Overall I think the hotel is a good place to stay, convenient, and with reasonable rates (though at peak times the rates soar).

Room Tip: A small family is better off with two doubles rather than the queen-and-sleeper combination; the sle...

“Good room; skip the free breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2011

We stayed one night in December. The room was very nice. Great location. Plenty of parking. The free breakfast was really terrible so don't even go there.

“Good place, good people”

Spent a night in stowe to visit ben & Jerry and buy some local food product. Really enjoyed Best Western there. Prices are reasonnable, my room was quite big and clean. Plus there is free wifi and breakfast. Some places look cheaper but they charge you for Internet, breakfast....People were very useful too helping me going to right places for shopping. They have a restaurant, food is just ok, I think there are better places in Stowe but that was just convenient for me not going out again. Good place, I would recommend, worth the price.

“Good enough”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 December 2011

Needed to stay in the area for a family function. The hotel is at the top of a super steep hill. The rooms were ok but clean. The breakfast was good. It did cost more than is expected for the property. Used the swimming pool, it was pretty good.

“Happy to report that this is now a non-smoking property!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

We have stayed here at least five times over the years, perhaps more. It is an older property but it is well-maintained and some upgrades have recently been made. It is located in a quiet location that is still very close to Route 89, making it very convenient. We have found the service and the condition of this motel to be predictably good. The complimentary breakfast is pretty average but there's plenty to eat. The coffee is very good - the locally roasted Green Mountain coffee. There's plenty of parking. There is a sparkling pool with a hot tub, and there are two saunas, a game room, a modest restaurant (open for dinner most but not all nights), and a conference room. Due to the recent snowstorm we stayed in and had dinner at the restaurant and it was good, not haute cuisine but fresh and tasty.

Contrary to all the hype, Vermont is open for business following Hurricane Irene. In general northern Vermont did not get as much damage. However, if you are going there to do business with the state employees call ahead and check to see where they are now located because the state buildings at Waterbury did receive significant storm damage.

Room Tip: I don't think there's an elevator. If stairs are a problem ask for a ground floor room, of w...
