“Different but interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2011

Travelling for us means moving outside comfort zones. This B&B is different but we wanted to stay somewhere different. We stayed in one of three cabins set higher up the hill surrounded by trees and hiking trails. the cabin was clean with a new shower stall and a very effective wood burning heater. The bed was firm with good linen. We had lots of privacy and still access to resources in the main house. There is no TV but we came prepared with books and downloaded movies. No lock on the door so we left stuff in car or case. Breakfast was delicious but not always to our taste or preferred diet but that's okay too. Where we did have a few grumbles was in the total absence of lighting leading to the cabins. Torches were supplied but we came back unexpectedly one night - impossible to see our way to our cabin. Solar lights on the path would have been appreciated. The Inn Keepers are delightful straight talkers and helpful when needed. We enjoyed their company.

Room Tip: take one of the new little LED torches and leave in your bag or car.

“Never had such a bad B&B experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2011

Vermont has many wonderful B&Bs. This isn't one of them.

The owners of the Grunberg Haus are clearly burnt out, which is understandable considering how long they've run this B&B. They must also field a fair number of complaints from guests.

The place was just plain dirty. The bedding was cringe-worthy. The bathroom was small, dark, and grungy.

The fireplace in the common area was lovely, and it would have been quite enjoyable if there had been a reasonable fire. We returned from dinner around 7:30, and the fire was already dying. We phoned the owners' quarters to ask for more firewood and were given two more logs. "Rationed," as an earlier reviewer put it. There was an empty bag of marshmallows near the fireplace, along with sticks for roasting. No replenishments there, either.

Breakfasts had close to no protein--VERY heavy on low-quality carbohydrates. No plain eggs available, even though we had requested a protein choice. How difficult or expensive would it have been to scramble a couple of eggs or provide some plain yogurt and honey? Worse: Bad Coffee!

My husband and I have stayed in many B&Bs across the country over several decades. We have never had such a bad stay. A very unpleasant surprise at this price point.

Room Tip: The main house is cheaply constructed and very noisey. Perhaps the cabins are quieter.

“This place was great...and the breakfast made it even better!”

Not the Ritz...but not a dump..has some great charm to it. The fireplace is awesome, and that it makes all the difference when all you want to do after a long day on the slope is veg out. The rooms are a nice size..and yes there are no locks, but no matter....no worries things are safe. The shower is a little small, and needed some updating...but nothing too bad. I loved staying there, the owners are great, and really make you feel welcome. Plenty of board games and free tea/hot chocolate to sip on by the fire...oh and free popcorn too! Oh and did I mention that they get discount lift tickets, and you save some decent money. The price is fine..and the location is central to a lot of good mountains. Yes you should have a 4x4 vehicle to get up the road, but that goes without saying in Vermont. There are some great places to grab a bite about 15 mins away, so enjoy the little trip out. There is a rustic side to staying here, and if you are fussy...don't stay here. If you are not fussy and know what this place is about; you will like staying here.

Room Tip: There are all nice..

“Can't beat Linda's Ricotta French Toast!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2011

Linda and Jeff have rooms in the Inn and 3 spacious cabins. They immediately made us feel welcome. We stayed in an immaculate cabin for 4 days and loved it. A+ for cleanliness and comfort. We had wonderful breakfasts each day prepared by Linda with Jeff's assistance. Love that coffee and selection of fresh baked breads. They provide lots of cool extras as well...I especially liked the popcorn and Amoretto nightcaps. The freezer is also stocked with complimentary Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream. Linda and Jeff were both very helpful in aiding us in selecting hikes and other activities in the area such as checking out covered bridges and Burlington on Lake Champlain. We greatly enjoyed our stay and would cheerfully recommend Grunberg Haus to couples and families.

“A Little Tired”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 May 2010

The property is tucked away up a hill and looks a little uninviting from the outside, inside the property is clearly lacking attention in some areas. The rooms are functional, However the bathroom appeared old and tired, the Chris Suite has a skylight which for some reason is boarded up.

There is a certain rustic charm, but a lot of work needs doing to the property which clearly hasn't been done lately. When you have a shower if anyone else flushes a toilet in the property, the water stops flowing. There is next to no sound proofing, so you can hear every word from other rooms when you are trying to sleep. Whilst you should be able to trust in your fellow man, having no locks on the bedroom doors when you go out for the day is a big concern, especially if you leave anything of value in your room.

The hosts were extremely friendly and helpful with lots of advice about the area, it was a pleasure to chat with them.

Would we recommend anyone to stay here, unfortunately not, as friendly and helpful as the hosts were and irrespective of general prices in the area this property doesn't warrant the price of $125 a night. We have stayed in loads of budget Mom and Pop motels that are in better condition than this.
