“Clean, comfortable, and reasonably priced”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 February 2011

The new owners of the White Horse Inn have done a fine job in updating the furniture, carpets, bathrooms etc of this Inn that is located less than a half mile from the Mount Ellen (Sugarbush South) access road. The great/common room has a new wooden floor and the shelves are filled with interesting books and DVD's. We had a TV in our room but sitting in front of the fire with a snort of Drambuie was much more relaxing. Todd chatted with us for awhile about the inn and the fine art of clearing snow from the roof without taking a tumble - it's always nice to meet new people while traveling. After staying at several other bed & breakfasts where the diminishing enthusiasm of the owners is reflected in the inn itself, it was nice to see genuine concern about appearances and presentation.

“Excellent Choice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 February 2011

You can not beat the location for skiing, close to Sugarbush . We took the family for a midweek ski break , the room was perfect, food was great, Brenda & Todd were welcoming, and the fire in the great room, so pretty. The place is clean and the beds are comfortable.

“A very welcoming B&B!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 February 2011

Great location for Sugarbush or Mad River. Nice clean well decorated rooms with modernized bathrooms.
Cooked breakfasts every day were delicious. What stood out the most was a welcoming plate of homemade cookies after skiing, the roaring fire in the common room, and the genuine sense that the owners were happy to have you there!

“Don't Get Fooled”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2011

We booked here for a few reasons. We reserved Room 15 for us and our 2 young kids and we thought the idea of 2 rooms with bunk beds for the kids and a separate room for us would be ideal. They mentioned that a nice French door adjoined the room so I expected a bit of class. It turned out that the room was at the end of a very long basement hall so long in fact, that the WIFI didn't reach the room. To add insult to injury, the place feels like a dorm and there is no class whatsoever. It is not a quaint inn once you leave the entrance and common room. The rooms are tiny and people leave their doors open to get some air into the rooms. The best part was that the "adult" room of our "Suite" didn't have a TV. We had to put the kids to bed and then with no WIFI and no TV and a wafer thin glass door separating our bed from the kids, we had to sit there quietly with nothing to do. When I mentioned this to the innkeeper, she happily suggested that we leave our kids in the room unattended and spend time in the common areas. I don't know about other parents but I would never leave 2 young boys unattended in an Inn with 27 rooms. Our room was 100's of feet away and down a flight of stairs from the common room. Furthermore, there was an exit near our room to the outside that we would not be able to watch. Family Inn or not, that is an unsafe practice to suggest. Parents should never be asked to leave their kids unattended.

They also ran out of hot water and everyone needed to take a cold shower after skiing. The innkeeper told us this was an isolated incident yet I spoke to several other guests that said that they had no hot water too.

All in all this was a terrible experience that I wish on no-one.

We do not “fool” people. Our photos and descriptions are accurate. The room that is in question is one of our most popular rooms and the door that divides the 2 rooms is in fact a French door.
The linens in the room are Laura Ashley, and it is bright and comfortable. The problem seems to be that you were upset that WIFI did not reach your room. It has nothing to do with the location of the room being on our ground floor, WIFI does not reach certain rooms due to the signal. There is nothing unusual about the room location, it is a room, in which you must walk down a hall to get to, that is most common. The suggestion of leaving your kids in the rooms, was phrased, “some families do put their children to bed and then go to the great room for TV, fireplace etc”, not leave your kids alone and take off. However in addition to this suggestion you were told there were books to borrow and you could read in your room, and option you decided not to go with as your focus was WIFI.
We did have a water issue, as it does happen in businesses, be that the business is a private owned inn or a large corporate hotel, and we called a plumber to fix the problem, the problem was fixed. We are sorry your stay at our inn was not what you expected, it is with most and many have a wonderful time here and refer their friends and family.

“Clean and good breakfast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2011

Top 4 reasons to stay at the White Horse. 1) clean rooms, 2) good home made breakfast, 3) very cozy "great room" with fireplace roaring in winter, and 4) good price.
I think the owners are trying to run a tight ship, however, I found myself trying to keep them happy rather than the other way around. When I first entered reception I was met by such a cool response, I wondered if I was intruding on the private entrance. My friends reported similar experience on checking in. At breakfast our large group sat down and we were informed a little sharply that we were at the wrong table. we were happy to move to the table that was made up expressly for us (nicely done, but no note or indication to let us know we should sit there) and were turned down. again I felt like I was stepping around the inn keeper.
The inn is conviently located for skiing at Mad River Glen and Sugarbush and near all the restaurant/bars/conveniences for the Valley.
