My wife and I just returned from a two day midweek stay at the Stowehof and could not have been more pleased. From the moment of our arrival, until check out, every aspect of the inn was just what the doctor ordered. Those that seek the glitz and glitter of a super deluxe ski country sojourn should look elsewhere. The Stowehof is in a wonderful time warp, taking you back to an earlier era in Vermont ski country inns. The staff, from Bertha the head housekeeper, to Karen at the front desk, to the bartender in the pub, and to Curt in Emily's Restaurant, were all very friendly, unobtrusive, and helpful. The indoor pool and adjacent hot tub were just the right temperatures and provided the right mellowing out experience before drinks in the pub and an exquisite dinner by the fireplace in the dining room. The lobster bisque could not have been improved upon and the beef and shrimp fondue was so good I had it the next night. The wine list is excellent, heavy on France, and can be pricey, but there are also good values and a California zinfandel at $28.00 was delicious. Our room was sparely furnished, but had all the necessities, including two closets and two luggage racks. The enormous king size bed was extremely comfortable and all rooms have a flat screen TV and wi-fi. An afternoon sleigh ride with the personable Paul Ruta and his imposing and well trained Belgian horse, Doc, provided beautiful views of the countryside and afterwards, hot chocolate in the pub (yes, by a fireplace) was perfect. We will certainly go back and recommend it highly to anyone seeking real value and first class "country comfort" in Stowe.
