We stayed in a room in one of the carriage houses on the Edson Hill property. It was a large rustic room, with a wood-burning stone fireplace. It was pleasant enough, though the lighting was deficient, the two armchairs were broken down and needed to be replaced, and two of the three back windows did not open properly, as they’d come out of their tracks. Our room obviously needed some renovation.
Be forewarned that the inn charges a 15% gratuity on top of the 10% Vermont accommodations tax, which boosts the stated room price by a hefty 25%. A gratuity should be something you freely add if you're happy with the service, not something extorted through fine print. Considering the mediocre state of our room (in need of repairs) and the lackluster service, I was not happy paying as much as we did.
On the positive side, the property itself is gorgeous, with lawns stepping down to a pretty pond. The restaurant is good, though a bit pricey, serving a prix fixe dinner for $40.
For x-country skiers the property has several loop trails, and there are stables with rental horses for the equestrian set.
