“Grey Gables Mansion - A Home Away From Home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 February 2006

My sister and I have just returned from a 4-day stay at the Grey Gables Mansion. What a wonderful experience!

When we arrived at the Mansion we were warmly welcomed by Tim, Debbie and Heinzie (the resident tail wagger). From the moment we stepped into the Mansion we felt comfortable and relaxed. The Mansion is very beautiful. You can just close your eyes and imagine being back in the 19th century. The room we had was large and spotless. The breakfast served each day was excellent. I particulary loved the apple walnut pancakes that Tim prepared. What a chef!

Tim and Debbie were very helpful in giving directions to the areas we wanted to see. Also they gave great tips they discovered themselves - antique stores and shops in several surrounding villages.

Grace and I sat downstairs in the Library with Tim and Heinzie - watching a great movie on the Sunday night we were there. That there was blazing fire to keep us toasty just added to the pleasure of the experience.

The adventure of visting and staying in the small town of Richford was everything we expected and more.

We went shopping and dining in Sutton a lively border town in Quebec, Canada just 10 minutes away from the Mansion.

We can't wait to return to visit again in each season. It's the best of all worlds.

When you visit, make sure to give a big hug to Heinzie (or Heinz as his is more formally known). He is the sweet, loving pup that welcomes you each time you come and go at the Mansion. He is reason enough to return!

The Grey Gables Mansion is a beautiful old Victorian, with gorgeous clean rooms, if you are a fan of old architecture this place is a gem. That's about all the good I can say of it from our stay there.

We went during the week in off-season (maybe that was part of the problem). When we arrived there was not a person to be found. There was a note on the door instructing us there was a key in the mailbox and to let ourselves in.

Our room was very nice. We settled in for a little while, thinking maybe someone would come by sooner or later. A few hours later we were still the only ones there. Luckily (depending how you look at it), Richford is not a large town so we managed to find a decent restaurant to have dinner (it's called The Crossing, and while the decor leaves something to be desired, the food was surprisingly good).

The downside to Richford being such a small town is that there's absolutely nothing to do so after dinner we went back to the house. There was STILL no one around. We sat in the livingroom and watched tv, constantly glancing at the front door getting more creeped out by the minute. It just started to feel downright strange. When we retired to the bedroom I had to squelch the desire to put the chair under the doorknob.

Promptly at 8am we got a knock on the door and someone telling us breakfast would be served in 10 minutes. We went down to the dining room and all of our curiousity was answered. Pam, the proprieter, was out of town and someone else was running the place for her. While she was very nice when we saw her, we decided to cut our stay short and left that morning.

“Wonderful Stay at Grey Gables Mansion”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2005

I highly recommend you stay at the Grey Gables next time you take a trip to northern Vermont.

This mansion is gorgeous. It has a lot of charm and has been very nicely renovated.

Our room was nice, clean and spatious. This B&B is in a very small town and it is really quiet. Ideal for rest and relaxation.

In the evening, we watched TV in the common room and Pam, our hostess had lit the fireplace for us (we were the only people checked-in that day). It was very romantic.

When asked about what do to in the area Pam gave us some great recommendation. She also recommended a restaurant which turned out to be delicious.
