“Friendly Service, Clean Rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 March 2011

The person at the front desk was very nice and welcoming. He told us to call if we needed anything, and was very hospitable. The lobby was also fine, it was clean with a few nice pieces of furniture. The rooms were clean, they smelled like air freshener, but you got used to it after a few minutes. The fridge was clean, as was the bathroom. I had a king size bed, so that was nice. I did not like the bed spread, which felt granny like. The downside was that the hallways smelled like cigarette smoke, but the rooms were fine. the location was pretty good, considering we were just a few minutes from downtown Montpelier. I would have liked to see a pool, but that was not a big deal. Breakfast was also provided with waffles, which were good. It was a very good deal for as little money as it costed. Nothing amazing, but I was not expecting anything amazing for $60. I was also only staying for one night, so the few downsides were really not a very big deal. I liked best that the rooms were clean. but simple. My least favorite thing was the funny smells in all different parts of the hotel.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms, downstairs ones look into lot.

“Not for the wife and kids, no.”

I understand Montpelier is a rugged town in many respects, but the Econolodge there is a [feces] hole. The room my buddies and I shared had a sickly perfume smell futilely trying to cover up the carpet's stench, where a mob hit or two must've went down years prior. The carpet? You didn't dare walk on it bare foot. The beds and the bathroom were fair, I'll give them that. But bags of trash sat by the soda and candy machines for more than 24 hours and breakfast was a culinary nightmare due to the filth, albeit I did choke down a few decent sausage links and had some respectable orange juice. The place is fine for transients, fugitives from justice, and evicted deadbeat dads, but otherwise, I advise against this place unless you're in a pinch. We stuck it out because we had enough beer and herbal jazz to laugh off the squalor, and were just in town to ski, so we were only there to sleep at night. There are, however, some decent bars downtown, a quick 1/2 mile walk away. The hard-to-find Irish pub in town is very good -- great wings!

Thank you for your time and honesty. We appreciate your feedback as it helps us to identify some problems that could be overlooked.
We are regretably sorry about this experience at our hotel. Housekeeping is generally on top of their duties yet sometimes there are unforseen variables that may occur which may not be dealt with in a timely manner. The issues metioned here have been resolved, but there is no excuse for it not having been taken care of before or during the guest's stay.

Please note that for your next stay with our hotel, our houskeeping services and front desk personnel are here to assist you around the clock with anything you may require, as we have always extended this courtesy to all of our guests. Your issues could have been simply resolved with a mere call to the front desk. The staff is here for your service and we want you to know this.

Thank you

“I was ripped off on my credit card”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 February 2011

I stayed for 1 night, on February 18, and was billed for 2 nights on my credit card.

I phoned back when I discovered that my credit card was charged too much and the guy that was there did not even remember the family name of the owner, his boss. Strange! He could not understand what has happened with my credit card.

I phoned to talk to the boss the next day and he was not there.

I left a message to call me back and he didn't call back.

I contacted the Choice chain and a lady answered me about my points. She was completely out of topic.

I wrote back and I'm waiting to see what will happen.

It looks like an employee took money out of the cashier and charge it to my credit card in order to balance.

I'm very unhappy with the situation and will not go again to Choice Hotels.

“Decent standards, clean hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2010

Here we had a very good time and were satisfied with the Econolodge. I wasnt happy that someone removed my "Do not disturb" sign and took it away but thats probably unavoidable. Generally the hotel was clean and had some happy people working there. Housekeeping people were friendly and quick to get their work done. Happy with that stay.

“New Owners.... Giving them a chance to add some TLC to the place...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2010

When we checked into this hotel we were told that the current owners have only had it for about 2 months or so. The gentleman at the desk was very friendly, and they were "trying"... I noticed that they had a plate of cheese and crackers for guests in the lobby. The room itself, I'm not going to lie, was far from great. It needed new mattresses, new.... everything. And it smelled terrible - like mildew. However, they've owned it for TWO months... right in the middle of the busiest season of the year. I would say that if they new owners are willing to sink some much-needed funds into the place, it will be okay in the long run. I will be visiting VT again next fall, as usual, and will give it one more try. If the owners have failed to upgrade the place until that point, then that will be my last visit. However, in all fairness, I think they should be given a chance to prove themselves. I would say, if you stay, stay with an open mind.
