After reading the reviews, my friends and I were pretty frightened of having to spend a night at the Blue Spruce Motel. Upon driving into Middlebury and seeing the motel for the first time, all of the signs did not look promising. However, we judged the motel too soon.
Checking in was easy and the owners were very kind and outdoorsy. It turns out that my group (five of us) had booked a suite for the night. Driving around back to room 122, we had no idea what to expect, but we were pleasantly surprised what awaited us. Room 122 was actually a two-floor suite with its own one car garage, which was very helpful in the frigid Middlebury winter (around 10 degrees outside). Upon entering, we felt as though we had entered through a time warp into the 1960s/1970s. The wooden suite was very clean, but all of the appliances were at least thirty years old. However, everything worked just fine.
The suite had 3 double beds, a pull-out coach, and a cot, which was perfect for our five-person group. The suite also contained some unique furniture, which one would have to see to believe. The suite came with a fully stocked kitchen, which we did not use (besides for the cups) since there was a complimentary breakfast in the lobby. Some of the kitchenware was in the dishwasher, but that was not an issue for our group. Another nice amenity was the Wi-Fi (password is very reflective of the motel and its owners), which worked well with my MacBook, but a friend who had a PC had trouble with the Internet.
Overall, the Blue Spruce is fine for a one night stay in Middlebury even though it looks awful from the outside and it is about 10 minutes from the Village Green. I would recommend this hotel to budget travelers and anyone who is just looking for a place to stay for a night or two, but not long term.
