“DON'T FOREGET ANYTHING”

When we pulled up to the motel my wife said, "I'm not staying here". We went to the desk to check in and they couldn't find a key to the room, so they had to give us the master. I was told the room was located around back past the pot holes. Well the pot holes they were talking about can swallow a small car. When we drove back to the room we passed the sheep next door. My wife continued to say " I'm not staying here". When we got into the room it was larger than I thought and very clean. The bathroom had a door that I think went to the front office. I immediately put my suitcase there because it felt creepy. My wife thought she would wake up dead. I talked her into staying since it was only for one night and they already had our $108.00. We went a few more miles to dinner (which was great) at Rosie's. We saw a Marriott which we really considered going to but we went back to the Blue Spruce reluctantly. The next morning at 10:30 am we got a call that check out time was 10:am, so we rushed to leave and left a brand new Ipod in the drawer that we bought for my son's birthday. When we realized we had left the Ipod, we called back and they said they hadn't seen it. No surprise! A bad ending to a bad stay.

“Better than Expected”

After reading the reviews, my friends and I were pretty frightened of having to spend a night at the Blue Spruce Motel. Upon driving into Middlebury and seeing the motel for the first time, all of the signs did not look promising. However, we judged the motel too soon.

Checking in was easy and the owners were very kind and outdoorsy. It turns out that my group (five of us) had booked a suite for the night. Driving around back to room 122, we had no idea what to expect, but we were pleasantly surprised what awaited us. Room 122 was actually a two-floor suite with its own one car garage, which was very helpful in the frigid Middlebury winter (around 10 degrees outside). Upon entering, we felt as though we had entered through a time warp into the 1960s/1970s. The wooden suite was very clean, but all of the appliances were at least thirty years old. However, everything worked just fine.

The suite had 3 double beds, a pull-out coach, and a cot, which was perfect for our five-person group. The suite also contained some unique furniture, which one would have to see to believe. The suite came with a fully stocked kitchen, which we did not use (besides for the cups) since there was a complimentary breakfast in the lobby. Some of the kitchenware was in the dishwasher, but that was not an issue for our group. Another nice amenity was the Wi-Fi (password is very reflective of the motel and its owners), which worked well with my MacBook, but a friend who had a PC had trouble with the Internet.

Overall, the Blue Spruce is fine for a one night stay in Middlebury even though it looks awful from the outside and it is about 10 minutes from the Village Green. I would recommend this hotel to budget travelers and anyone who is just looking for a place to stay for a night or two, but not long term.

“Awful place to Stay!”

This place is in desperate need of renovations. Old paint, bathroom small, carpet worn, little kitchen which was all torn up enclosed behind louvered doors. The biggest thing, people have smoked in the room for years and that odor just can't be masked other than gutting the whole inside. We wouldn't have stayed here, but every hotel in the immediate area was full, I just put the covers over my face when sleeping. I do have sympathy although for the owners, guess they are trying to make ends meet, but they were kind of sparing furnishing us with extra towels.

“Interesting experience!”

The Blue Spruce was an interesting experience. The motel itself was what I expected for the price: nothing extravagent, but sufficient. I was happy for the most part. The rooms were a little outdated and small, but again...what I paid for. I wasn't looking for anything amazing; I just wanted a place to stay. The breakfast was good and the people were nice. I had an unfortunate experience when I was there though. There were some plumbing issues: the toilet overflowed in the middle of the night onto the floor of the bathroom. Apparently someone had flushed a credit card down the toilet. So, we had to leave the room for a while and come back after things were settled. Unfortunate situation, but I would probably stay there again if I were in Middlebury for some reason.

“Solid on the basics”

I stayed at the Blue Spruce for a couple of days while visiting a friend in the area. It was affordable, which was my main priority, and my room was clean. This is neither a B&B nor a chain hotel, but a small individually owned roadside motel. (I think the owners live on site.) It's a rectangular building, single story, with the lobby in the middle of the building and guest rooms extending off to either side. Room doors open directly to the outside. My guess is that the building dates to the 1950s or 1960s.

I was visiting on a weekend, and things were pretty quiet for the most part. Not many guests (I assume February is not a busy time of the year). I will say that the rooms didn't seem to screen out noise all that well - I noticed the sound of traffic out front on US 7 when I woke up on Monday morning.

The owners were very pleasant and went out of their way to help me with the few requests I had. I really enjoyed talking with them. The Blue Spruce is not a posh place: some of the furnishings are worn and/or a little dated, and the owners are obviously trying to save money wherever they can (e.g., fluorescent bulbs in the lamps instead of incandescents). So business travelers accustomed to upscale accomodations will want to look elsewhere. However, I was pretty happy with the Spruce. I was surprised by the presence of wireless internet access, although I didn't have a chance to test it. There's also a computer in the lobby for guest use, which I wasn't expecting.
And there's a continental breakfast. I didn't get a chance to sample it, but it looked like the usual suspects: waffles, cereal, etc.

All in all, I was satisfied with my stay, and I would stay at the Blue Spruce again.

  • Liked — Clean lodgings at an affordable price!
  • Disliked — The wall-mounted soap dispenser in the shower was a bit of a surprise.
