Traveled to Londonderry with wife and daughter over the Presidents Holiday in Feb. 2007. We have stayed in many motels and Inns along the souther VT stretch to ski at Stratton, Bromley, Okemo, Mt. Snow and now this location near Magic Mtn ski area. Dostal's advertised as a budget hotel. At $150 per night, hardly that but OK, so it is intended for the budget minded. It is withing 350 feet of Magic Mtn. hence their only redeeming quality. Staying everywhere in the past 20 years allows me to have some idea of what defines budget vs. what is of decent quality. Budget may be a little worn, in need of updating, not as many home type accomodations. It does not mean filthy, wretched, disgusting, all of which describe this place. Now, the really tough stuff here. Rooms are outdated, I mean really outdated. But, can I take that for a $150/night budget hotel? Sure. Beds are basically unusable. Go ahead, give them a try and stay here for your self. The maid service tucks the sheets and may wipe down the shower. How does that explain three bugs I puposely left in the corner of the bedroom near the electric baseboard heater all weekend? It does not. Hair was in the sheets when we checked in. Urine and excrement stains in the toilet, we had to clean. Showers were actually warm and the toilet worked but the floors were linoleum and peeling with caulk and dirt marks all around. Very unsanitary looking. The rug was gold shag sprinkled with dirt stains, possible mold and mildew. We did not have cable TV or any TV the entire weekend. This was an isolated incident but the management was quite frankly, scary although I approached them at least 10 times to have them look at it. They changed the TV out on our last night (4th) and still did not work. I can live with that. Breakfast was supposed to be served daily and as advertised, a hot breakfast. Soon as the hotel filled up, we got cereal. Mind you the breakfast area is the location of the bar at night. This place also has an adjacent hostel filled with young reveling college party animals who also run drunk and rampant all through the night on the weekends. I can also live with that...did it too. The smell of puke near the food service area at the bar was evident for two mornings on the weekend. Eggs we accidentally dropped when we got our hot meal on Friday morning were still in the corner of the booth on Monday, when we left. Evidence there is no clean-up service. We had to request towels three of the four days and toilet paper 2 of the four days. THe manager, who insists he some type of boxer or boxing coach stated to us several times, "it has been a tough winter, no business, ya know what I mean?" What he is saying is that the hotel cannot possibly give you anything that would resemble $150 a night. The pool. My kid insisted on going in. So we did, on Sunday night before we left Monday. We were in the luke warm pool indoors when the same manager came into the pool area with a fantastik spray bottle spraying the rug on the pool deck and said "someone just went to the bathroom on the rug all over the place"....and there it was. Now, with the lighting you cannot see the stains of either human or animal excrement, but sure enough, he knew it was there. He then stated to us..."man it freakin' never ends." Meaning......once again, you will get none of your $150 a night worth. He then stated to us and I quote...."the pool is fine, it's got chlorine." We immediately and carefully exited the pool and showered. We stayed and covered the sheets with our own blankets, did the best we could to stay out of the room and managed 4 really nice days skiing at magic. It is a shame the hotel can't make it clean for the location is really ideal. This is a dump, and I have stayed at old motels that are clean and comfortable. If you want an example of outdated but clean in this area....The Chalet Motel near Manchester, THe Toll Road Inn, all old but nicely maintained and warming. If you plan to ski at Magic, take the Dostal's test. If you want to save yourself from feeling like you've got bed bugs, stay somewhere else.
