“Very nice, but not quite worth the price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

My wife and I just got back from a weekend in Killington, Vermont. We had a studio room in the Killington Grand Resort. Staff was exceedingly friendly from the moment we walked in the door. The entrance area was nice, but not quite "grand". Parking was free and plentiful.

Our room was nice, with a nice flatscreen TV with a decent selection of channels, fully stocked kitchenette, a full-size couch, and a large window with a great view overlooking the ski slopes. The room was nicely laid out. We had a bit of confusion when we first walked in - we didn't realize that our studio room had a murphy bed, so we spent a few seconds looking around for the bed.

Speaking the bed, it was uncomfortable. It was very stiff and the sheets and comforter weren't much better. I was a bit disappointed because for this price, one can usually expect a very nice bed. From talking with other guests, we learned that our bed was not typical and non-studio rooms feature down comforters and very soft mattresses. We won't be booking a studio room next time. Adding to our minor sleep difficulties were our neighbors. We didn't appreciate the family who let their children run late-night hallway 100-meter dashes. Either they were elephant-sized children or they were wearing cement shoes. We'll never know. Granted, these problems were short lived, and should not be blamed on Killington Grand Resort, nor should the antics of one family discourage you from staying there.

The bathroom was very nice and clean. We were informed by the front desk staff that all the bathrooms were soon to be renovated, although ours didn't need it in my opinion. While the room itself had an eclectic, almost apartment-like decorating style, the bathroom was well decorated and appointed. The shower had very little water pressure, but it wasn't quite bad enough to make me say anything about it to maintenance. The towels, washcloths, soaps, and robes were all pleasantly high quality, although as other reviewers have said, using the slippers will cost you.

For the most part, the public areas were excellent. Honestly my favorite part of the getaway was sipping a drink on the oversized leather couch with my wife, basking in the glow and warmth of the roaring real wood fireplace. The large outdoor firepit with Adirondack chairs made from skis was a nice touch. The fitness center was relatively large, clean, and well-appointed. The steam room and sauna were great after a long day on the slopes.

The real gem of this hotel, as other reviewers have said, is the outdoor, heated pool and hot tubs. My wife and I were swimming in an outdoor pool in Vermont in February, how cool is that?! It even had an indoor entrance to the pool for the less adventurous type. The pool was clean and almost bath water temperature, which was more than welcome in the 15 degree weather.

Another huge selling point of this hotel is the location. There's something to be said about being able to leave your car in one spot for the whole trip (not that we did that). It's very nice to not have to deal with Killington traffic and parking. It's also awesome to be able to sleep until 20 minutes before the lifts open and still be one of the first to carve into the corduroy. There's a very convenient pedestrian/ski bridge that brings you directly from the resort ski check room (complementary) to the bottom of Snowshed Slope. The hotel is also very close to a myriad of restaurants and shops along Killington Road. Unfortunately we had to use these restaurants for breakfast because the breakfast at the Grand disappointingly was not included with our stay. Judging by other reviewers comments, we decided our money would be better spent elsewhere.

Overall, we weren't blown away with the hotel, but it all comes back to the bed for me. The quality of the bed has a massive impact on my view of the hotel, so I hope they upgrade the studio room beds soon. The rest of the hotel grew on us quickly and and helped us have a wonderful weekend getaway.

Room Tip: Studio rooms have uncomfortable beds, others do not. Even numbered rooms face the mountain and pool...

“Getting Better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

My family and I stayed at the Killington Grande for our third time and I must say it improves every time we visit. It is not 5 star, but improvements have been made and it is certainly very comfortable and clean which we feel is the main thing. We stayed in room 206 which was probably one of the furthest away rooms that you could get but it had a balcony and wonderful views of the slops, the free wi fi signal was also very good from here. We had a meal in the restaurant which was not pleasant, it may have been the choices we made, but the service was very poor as it was the last year we went On our last night, we did not go out as I had hurt my leg so we decided to eat at the bar and the service was much better. We will go back again as it is close to the slopes and the general staff do really try to help.

Room Tip: 206 but a long way from the slope, but good views and not too noisy

“Exceeded expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Three of us stayed in a studio room in the Killington Grand Resort Hotel for 4 nights. The hotel and our room was very clean, and in excellent condition. The beds were clean and comfortable, the kitchenette was fully equipped to a high standard. The wood fire in the downstairs lobby and the outdoor pool were very relaxing. The gym was of a good size and well equipped. With just a short walk to the ski lift we could ski with the minimum of preparation and fuss. Best of all was the staff - they were polite, friendly and efficient. This hotel and staff exceeded my expectations. I will revisit and would happily recommend this hotel to my friends.

“A Holiday Inn Express in an excellent location”

I Just spent a weekend at the Killington Grand hotel with my girlfriend. The room was clean, but nothing special. The bed was uncomfortable, and the walls were paper thin. You can hear the conversations in the next room. To make matters worse, it sounded like the guests in the room above us were walking around with ski boots on until about 3am. We called the front desk to complain both nights, and it didn't get any better.

I don't think we encountered a single employee at the hotel over the age of eighteen. Not really what I was expecting. Clearly, you are paying for the location. You can walk to the Snowshed lodge, which is very convenient. Next time, I'd save a lot of extra money and stay a short shuttle ride away from the mountain.

“Mixed feelings.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

Four buddies flew across the country for a ski 'mancation'. We booked three days of skiing over two nights in advance and chose the Grand Resort Lodge, hoping for a great, close location and wonderful skiing.

We were able to check in at the desk but not given all the details of our package- I had to ask things like 'where do we go to get our skis, lift tickets, etc' as it was my first time at this location. The front desk staff was most concerned about telling us that while it was our first day there, we were NOT allowed to use the breakfast buffet until the following day. We got it the first time, -although she was adamant to tell us a second, and it became a running joke with my friends. We found the stairs to the bridge that took us to Snowshed- not exactly right against the slope and not so much fun to walk in ski boots- I recall walking to the lifts at Showshed and Ramshead in the past from the parking lot was a lot shorter distance to walk in these boots, and was surprised that the resort considers this a good solution. It's the closest hotel, but it doesn't feel very close when you're walking in ski boots across an icy bridge.

With a mild winter season so far in the East, we were hoping to get some decent skiing in and indeed, we did. From Snowshed we worked over to express quads and the K1 gondola to ski & snowboard The Peak, which was a nice run. Many of the blue and black runs had a great deal of ice and were treacherous for some skiers. I felt the runs needed more grooming, but was happy that the runs at the top of the mountain were all open.

For lunch we hit the K1 lodge and enjoyed chili and burgers- at about $20 per person. Though there is a bar, there is no wait service (which seemed strange) but the food was tasty and warm, if pricey. We hit the slopes again after lunch and found the mountain much busier with families in addition to teens and others enjoying the amenities. For dinners we piled in the cars and went off-resort to find food more to our liking.

Saturday morning we hit the breakfast buffet and we completely understood some of the complaints from other reviewers. I was not a fan of some of the food, especially those things that tasted prepackaged or heavy on preservatives, but there were some fresh options that were fine. We all managed to get something to eat and clomped back across the bridge towards our destination.

Saturday's skiing was tougher, as the mountain was VERY busy due to the Dew Tour as well as weekend warriors getting in the fresh powder. It looked like no grooming had been done overnight, so we tired of the icy blue runs and hit alternative slopes . The best thing about Killington is the number of mountains and runs- you can move to other areas and find something less travelled.

Sunday only two of our four skied, which was a shame as the skiing was the best yet. It appeared the entire resort had been groomed and the crowds were gone. The sun came out and we enjoyed most of the runs- some areas still had too much ice (in spite of having made snow AND grooming plowed powder on the ice, it was still basically a sheet of ice in some areas.)

I feel like Killington needs representation of Ski Patrol (I saw NONE on the mountain) and needs to spend more time marking off dangerous icy areas that cause lots of falls, especially in blind areas. But it's one of the largest in the Northeast and we got what we were hoping for- some decent fun in the snow.

As for the lodge- it's expensive to stay here, no doubt. It's close, but it's NOT really ski-in, it's really 100 yards of clomping away. Next time I will really have to reconsider where to stay given that the lodge isn't slopeside. Food is passable and expensive, but the staff was nice to deal with. It's basic lodging with few added amenities at a high price, but you pay for the location. Honestly, it's convenient but none of us felt it was a good value for the dollar. For adults, it was convenient to be able to break off or re-join the others when we needed a break, but it's hard to get to other areas without a car OR your skis. I'm surprised there is no regular shuttle from the lodge to the K1 lift or to Bear Mountain. We also felt like the resort had little information on how to get the most out of the resort itself- no welcome packet, no information about meals or good restaurants, evening activities, etc. When it's called a 'Lodge' it should take on a certain 'welcoming' attitude that this resort has clearly ignored, missing the details you find in lodges all over the Rockies, western USA, or European ski resorts.

I'll be back to Killington to ski for sure... but not sure about where I'll stay.

Room Tip: The lodge hallways are quite noisy but the ends of the halls are too far from stairs and elevators...

We appreciate that you took the time to review your most recent stay and “mancation” at Killington. Feedback like yours gives us the opportunity to build on that memorable guest service experience that we strive to create. In order for this to be accomplished it is important for us to ensure that each guest has all of the information needed to enjoy their stay. More specifically, our goal at the front desk is to provide you with these details and offer you the many avenues of information that are available about the resort. I apologize that we did not accomplish this goal for you and can ensure you that we have made changes in our check in process including offering a more detailed “welcome” packet which includes a list of daily activities, available dining experiences and more.
I am glad that you and your friends enjoyed your mountain experience and I have shared your observations with our resort team. I do hope you will take the opportunity to return to the Killington Grand Resort Hotel and see some of the other improvements that we have made including additional options during breakfast and continued progress in our no ski boot policy. Thank you again for choosing to stay with us and we look forward to your return visit to Killington.
