My wife and I just got back from a weekend in Killington, Vermont. We had a studio room in the Killington Grand Resort. Staff was exceedingly friendly from the moment we walked in the door. The entrance area was nice, but not quite "grand". Parking was free and plentiful.
Our room was nice, with a nice flatscreen TV with a decent selection of channels, fully stocked kitchenette, a full-size couch, and a large window with a great view overlooking the ski slopes. The room was nicely laid out. We had a bit of confusion when we first walked in - we didn't realize that our studio room had a murphy bed, so we spent a few seconds looking around for the bed.
Speaking the bed, it was uncomfortable. It was very stiff and the sheets and comforter weren't much better. I was a bit disappointed because for this price, one can usually expect a very nice bed. From talking with other guests, we learned that our bed was not typical and non-studio rooms feature down comforters and very soft mattresses. We won't be booking a studio room next time. Adding to our minor sleep difficulties were our neighbors. We didn't appreciate the family who let their children run late-night hallway 100-meter dashes. Either they were elephant-sized children or they were wearing cement shoes. We'll never know. Granted, these problems were short lived, and should not be blamed on Killington Grand Resort, nor should the antics of one family discourage you from staying there.
The bathroom was very nice and clean. We were informed by the front desk staff that all the bathrooms were soon to be renovated, although ours didn't need it in my opinion. While the room itself had an eclectic, almost apartment-like decorating style, the bathroom was well decorated and appointed. The shower had very little water pressure, but it wasn't quite bad enough to make me say anything about it to maintenance. The towels, washcloths, soaps, and robes were all pleasantly high quality, although as other reviewers have said, using the slippers will cost you.
For the most part, the public areas were excellent. Honestly my favorite part of the getaway was sipping a drink on the oversized leather couch with my wife, basking in the glow and warmth of the roaring real wood fireplace. The large outdoor firepit with Adirondack chairs made from skis was a nice touch. The fitness center was relatively large, clean, and well-appointed. The steam room and sauna were great after a long day on the slopes.
The real gem of this hotel, as other reviewers have said, is the outdoor, heated pool and hot tubs. My wife and I were swimming in an outdoor pool in Vermont in February, how cool is that?! It even had an indoor entrance to the pool for the less adventurous type. The pool was clean and almost bath water temperature, which was more than welcome in the 15 degree weather.
Another huge selling point of this hotel is the location. There's something to be said about being able to leave your car in one spot for the whole trip (not that we did that). It's very nice to not have to deal with Killington traffic and parking. It's also awesome to be able to sleep until 20 minutes before the lifts open and still be one of the first to carve into the corduroy. There's a very convenient pedestrian/ski bridge that brings you directly from the resort ski check room (complementary) to the bottom of Snowshed Slope. The hotel is also very close to a myriad of restaurants and shops along Killington Road. Unfortunately we had to use these restaurants for breakfast because the breakfast at the Grand disappointingly was not included with our stay. Judging by other reviewers comments, we decided our money would be better spent elsewhere.
Overall, we weren't blown away with the hotel, but it all comes back to the bed for me. The quality of the bed has a massive impact on my view of the hotel, so I hope they upgrade the studio room beds soon. The rest of the hotel grew on us quickly and and helped us have a wonderful weekend getaway.
