I read some of the more current reviews and question if they are really from people who stayed at the Cascades, or people who know the staff. The woman at the front desk was very rude and made our whole group feel VERY unwelcome. For the amount of time that we spent at the hotel itself, her attitude was not needed. How they allow dogs here is beyond me, the way this woman was I cannot see her being OK with a dog in a room.
Upon arrival to Killington our whole group spent the day skiing The Beast and after a long day we checked in and went to the pool/hot tub area. As soon as we arrived to the hot tub area, we were asked what room number we were in, which we all answered... a few moments later she comes back and asks the same question holding a room sheet, checks out our information then adds MORE CHLORINE to the hot tub as we are sitting in it without checking the PH level.
The hot tub AND pool were WAY over chlorinated and literally was burning my eyes and I had not even put my head underwater. The stench of chlorine was almost unbearable. My friends and I were both shocked as she came back once more and put MORE CHLORINE IN! It was disgusting. The pool/hot tub is not that nice as people rave. It needs to be cleaned and also they need to stop putting so much damn chlorine in it.
ALSO there are no little cubbies to put your skis... You have to bring them to your room or leave them in the car.
The beds were not comfy at all, and the heat was on a million degrees and you couldn't adjust it. I had the sliding door open to balance the heat and it was still not balancing (it was 8 degrees outside). You could hear everything going on at the lodge as the walls are pretty much made out of folding panel (thin walls used to make trade show booths) and when people walked down the hallways it sounded like people riding horse back.
The next day we wake up and go get breakfast before heading to Pico, they check off our room and after filling up my plate with COLD food the lady is back asking us which rooms we were staying in. She should have known by now what room we were in or that we were at minimum guests at the hotel. Clearly because we are all 30 years old she felt that we were party animals or something no idea, she was harassing us and it was completely unnecessary.
Also, you can not drink the water out of the tap or the water they supply at breakfast, it tastes like SURPRISE CHLORINE! The juices are disgusting as well, IMO it tastes like sugar and dirty water. The only thing palatable at breakfast was the bacon- which was cold.
Everyone in our group was skiers and we were gone the whole day. When we were done skiing we would go eat at one of the charming restaurants on Killington Road and stay for a show; we were all back at the hotel before 11pm to sleep.
The next morning we get breakfast, everything is cold and we end up throwing it out.
It was sad to feel as though we could not enjoy the amenities we paid for ONE because of the age discrimination (I really feel they were very discriminating to us because we are young looking thirty year old women.), TWO because of the over use of chlorine, THREE because the food was cold, and FOUR because of the cold attitude of the lady at the front desk.
My group did not use the shuttles to get to the mountain as we frankly did not want to talk to or deal with the lady at the front desk.
Would not recommend staying here just because it is close to the mountain, its not worth the stress or the stench of bleach! Almost all of the hotels and lodges offer shuttle service to the mountain and restaurants, and include free breakfast... its pretty much included in everyone's rates. There are so many adorable family owned, kid friendly, adult friendly lodges that are so warm and welcoming that going here is really just not worth the ten dollar savings. Even if it was just to lay my head down at night... there are cheaper and more accommodating places on the mountain to do that.
The only thing that was nice about the place was the fire place that our group did not get the chance to enjoy due to the harassment. The people who work here really need to realize that if they want people to come back and stay again they have to be more welcoming. Cascades lodge is not the only place off of Killington Road. I have stayed at high end resorts with friends and never received such an unwelcoming attitude.
