Yes, the hotel is older and showing it's age. As my mom said "this place has so much potential". Well, as one who was a guest at this property the year it first opened, I can attest to the fact that the place does have a lot going for it. As other reviewers have stated, it is showing its' age and is desperate need of an overhaul. You can see that the current owners are making some changes, and gradually renovating. Some of these changes I openly question, like the decision to move the restaurant from the second floor overlooking the Killington Access Road and instead moving it to the former gift shop: a windowless room with about 10 tables. The bar is now located on the main level where two conference rooms used to be. I found this a better location. The free breakfast was a nice touch and is still in the location of the former restaurant.
The outdoor pool and hot tub were closed for renovation, which is probably much overdue considering their poor overall condition.
The common areas are the original and the carpets are really showing wear. The walls are currently undergoing a painting and I question the choice of sea green for the third floor level. The original brown was much less harsh.
We stayed in room 323. The rooms are quite spacious and so are the bathrooms. Again, the age is showing from the slip covered chair to the floral pattern bedspreads. The towels in the bathroom were stained and the toilet would constantly run unless the handle was shaken. There was grout pieces on the bathroom floor which were also on the carpeting of the room outside the bathroom door.
There was A/C in the room, but the weather allowed the windows to be opened. There was quite a bit of street noise from the Killington Access Road, and considering the traffic is much lower in the summer, this could be a noise factor in the winter months.
Really, the design of the building is beautiful. The location can't be beat regardless of what season one visits. The staff were friendly and helpful, but the whole place badly needs an investment of money to refurbish everything from the rooms to the common areas. Considering the $61 we paid on Priceline ($74.91 with taxes/fees), it is doubtful this will happen any time soon.
I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered the free wi-fi internet available in all guest rooms and public areas. This was a nice feature considering that so many hotels charge an enormous daily rate for such a service.
That said, I keep returning to this hotel year after year. It has a cottage feel in an idyllic setting.
