“Front desk issues, noise problems, broken heating, inadequate bedding outweigh location and renovated units”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

Positives: the decor is nice. There's no dining area other than a counter and the suite we stayed in would not be navigable for a heavy person, but we're lean and don't mind eating at a breakfast bar, so the 1 bedroom suite we stayed in was pleasant, with a new-ish kitchen area and spacious bathroom. Recommend a roof box on your car if you're here to ski bec there's nowhere to store skis in the units. The outdoor pool is a treat; but there are concerns about cleanliness bec it's tiny, hot (really a giant hot tub), and guests aren't asked to shower before entering. Bonus: the hotel is only a few minutes drive from Ramshead lift.

The reason for the low rating is primarily a front desk staffer named Emi (Emmy?). it's not because we couldn't sleep the first night, when we were assigned a 1-bedroom unit in the basement. We were in an end unit where the mechanicals wrap around the building and the vibrations kept us up. Also, there was a fire drill that sent our kids running through the basement halls in their pyjamas, In the morning, no sleep either, due ski boots and jumping kids in the unit above us. So - with all the gear and groceries that come with two kids - we had to move to another room the next morning. As a result, we missed 1/2 the morning of skiing. Too bad we couldn't get the staff to move us, but when there are no in-room safes and the hotel states they aren't responsible for items in rooms, it would be foolish to head off to the mountain and hope your jewellry, new lap-top, dsi, a blackberry and four of the most valuable passports in the world didn't get lost in the shuffle - and it's not as if you can carry it all in your pocket while you ski. I should also mention that the first unit they gave us was not secure either; it had a door with direct outside access and it had been broken into - the area above and below the lock was carved straight thru with a crude knife and the daylight literally shone through in two places where it has been jimmied. Again, not a place to leave valuables while you ski.

So the 1 bdrm suite they moved us to was an improvement in that there was no noise. Also, it was the same room they showed us when we first stopped in to see if there was availability (yes, a bait and switch). The unit was cold, but staff assured us it would warm up through the night. Wrong. That's when we realized the beds are poorly dressed. Most ski places you get a duvet; at North Star it's just a thin motel-style coverlet. So that was night 2 with no sleep. The next day they gave us two plug-in space heaters. Later, Rick the maintenance man fixed the heat in the bedroom. Rick, by the way, was very capable and pleasant. Thanks Rick! The living room area seemed to develop the opposite problem - heat was either full on or full off. They hotel offered to move us again but 3 moves in a five night stay with kids and groceries? What kind of a vacation is that? Not to mention the value of again losing two hours on 4 lift tickets during best part of the ski day - more than the cost of the room.

At no point did staff offer any sort of compensation for two sleepless nights, a cold suite, lost skiing, but our family was ceaselessly pleasant. We requested nothing until check out, when I suggested one of the five nights should be complimentary - a modest request given any decent establishment would have have AUTOMATICALLY removed both nights of charges from our bill. As another recent reviewer has said, we suddenly had a fight on our hands. Our interface was Emi, whose is in such sore need of customer service training that we would not stay at North Star again as long as she is under their employ. She refused to pass along to management my request for a SINGLE night's compensation, was repeatedly sarcastic, siad she "work(s) for North Star, not you." I finally spoke to another woman with some decision-making ability on the phone, who ungraciously conceded a night's charge "Because you're not going to go away unless I do, are you?" Emi didn't try to contain her irritation about being overruled. "Oh my god. She COMPED you? It's only because you made us." What followed was a parody of poor interpersonal skills and an anger management problem. You'd think the money had come out of Emi's own pocket, but she is merely an employee who genuinely enjoys dispensing negativity. Too bad, the guy behind the desk the night before was so pleasant, it's hard to believe they work at the same hotel. Maybe Emi and the management-level woman on the phone should spend some time working shifts with him, and North Star can hope some of it rubs off. Unfortunately, these two woman make a return visit unthinkable. We understand that there are sometimes reasons for room changes or mechanical difficulties; what we can't understand is an operation that tolerates adversarial attitudes in those who represent it at the front of the house.

Food: We didn't eat there because the restaurant was completely empty and served only chicken fingers and burgers. However, we had nice meals in restaurants a short drive away - such as Sushi Oshi and the Back Behind Restaurant.

Room Tip: Don't accept a room below lobby level. Call it what they will - it's a basement with noise...

“BEWARE OF THIS PLACE”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

Just think for a moment why they don't post any pictures that really tells you what the place looks like. It's because it's SCARY. I wouldn't touch this place with a 10 mile pole. I seriously felt like I was going to be killed by a serial killer while I was there. If you look on their website, you will see beautifully renovate rooms. What they don't tell you is that those rooms are very limited and are being reserved so that you can't get them without paying an exorbitant fee. Find another place to stay. Consider yourself warned!

Room Tip: Don't stay here.

“Terrible Coordination and Customer Service in the booking department.”

Against our better judgment we responded to a mailing from North Star Lodge to take advantage of a promotion offer where we could get 3 day 2 nights free if we attended a timeshare presentation. Sounded like a good deal and as we had stayed at North Star before and found it a decent enough place...bad food but ok rooms and a nice heated pool. I signed up for the deal in August...way in advance of our requested dates in February but I figured better to get in early to ensure a room was available. Come to find out they couldn’t book any rooms for 2012 until at least Nov 1st....But the rep at All Seasons Group assured me that come Nov 1st I would have 1st dibs on any rooms that qualified for the promotion. So I signed up in August...dumb… they took my 55.00 holding fee. Fast forward to Nov - I call All Seasons Group back and I tell them the dates I want they say sure no problem we will book you and you will get a confirmation in the mail of your trip. When the confirmation arrives I see that they have booked me for 10 days later than I requested, which won't work for us as our kids are only off from school around the weekend I requested. So I call the All Seasons Group (first bad experience) and they are like we don’t know what happened we asked for the 2nd we don’t know why you got the 12th you need to call the NS lodge's vacation club to see why they did that..at this point I'm thinking we just call and get the right dates set up and no big deal...But I was wrong. When I call North Star they basically deny any responsibility for the issue and say that A...they can’t fix the booking , that the promotional company that does this promo for them, All Seasons Group, has to do it and resubmit it...and B...they don’t have any rooms anyway on the dates I needed and they even go as far as to say that even on the erroneous date they gave me they don't actually have any rooms available...which I can't believe...I'm sure they had rooms just not ones crappy enough that they were willing to let them go for a promo weekend.... At this point I can tell this is gonna get ugly.

So I call the promotional company All Seasons Group and explain that NS said so sorry but they can;t help and they have no rooms... I figured at this point time to get out...I tell All Seasons Group just cancel the booking we need to go on the dates we asked for. And to my surprise they said NP we understand, we'll cancel the booking and refund you the 55.00 that we took from you originally. I figure OK no harm then we go our separate ways and I go ahead and book a room at another place. Unfortunately it does not end here. Couple weeks later I get another confirmation from North Star, now it has the original booking date, so I go right to my credit and I see that not only does the 55.00 not come off my card...but I find that North Star has charged me 200.00 I assume 50% down to hold room. This is after they told me outright that they didn’t have any rooms on either weekend, didn’t acknowledge that they screwed up the date, and generally that I was basically SOL and I should go pound sand....they blame All Season Group and ASG blames them...but I did have an email confirmation from ASG that has the original dates correct...so I'm putting the blame on NS.

But even after all this they took the liberty of running my card through without even so much as a phone call back to explain the mix-up or that they now had a room or whatever BS they choose to hide behind...nope they just charged away. So at the time of writing this I’m still going back and forth with both parties to get my money back... But I will tell you. I will never sign up for a cheesy timeshare promo again…1st and only time and I should’ve trusted my gut and shredded that invitation...and I will certainly never set foot in NorthStar Lodge again...and really I won’t be missing much. At first glance the place looks ok...but it’s actually pretty second rate....kinda dirty, kinda beat-up just plain bad food...The pool...I will give it that!!! I like their outdoor heated pool...but that’s about it.

If All Season Group is able to resolve this…3rd try now…I might give them a C or C minus…My ASG rep was friendly and seemed to want to do the right thing…but unfortunately not very effective. North Star…they are just jerky.

Room Tip: Choose a different lodge you're likely to be disappointed if you stay here

“Great staff, great outdoor heated pool, nice small arcade for kids...etc..”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

The staff is friendly and accommodating. The kids loved the outdoor heated pool after a day on the slopes. It is more or less a huge hottub...it's great and very clean! A new addition I thought was great was a small gym. When we arrived our original room (consisting of 2 full size beds) was a little small for the 4 of us + equipment; however, we paid a little extra and upgraded to a suite w/ pull-out sofa and king size bed + kitchen, which I highly recommend for a family with small children. Very clean hotel, friendly staff, continental breakfast, awesome outdoor pool, small gym, small arcade...a little something for the whole family...and a small lounge. Great fireplace and Christmas tree in the sitting area. We've stayed here several times and we will continue to go back to the North Star Lodge.

Room Tip: I recommend a suite if traveling with small children.

“1st Time in Vermont”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2011

I stayed 2 nights at the North Star Lodge on a Travelzoo deal and absolutely loved it. The staff was great, the lodge was nice and clean. No complaints whatsoever. There is a great bbq restaurant about 4 miles up 4west but I can't remember the name...I will definitely come back
