“Our dream Vermont wedding!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 April 2011

My now-husband's mother has already written a review on this page, but we felt we had to add our own perspective. We stayed at Sumner for several days, including before and after our wedding. While we booked the Inn based on how beautiful the grounds and building were, we were pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed our room (the "wheelchair accessible" room on the first floor, or the "blue room" as we ended up calling it). Spacious, comfortable, impeccably clean and oh what a BEAUTIFUL bathroom with a gorgeous tub! The bathroom's window light in the morning made even night-owls like us feel happy to be awake. Though we were busy organizing last minute details for the wedding, Jill's homemade breakfast every morning was a wonderful start to the day, with local, fresh ingredients. We met the neighbors and their alpacas, and had a great walk down the front lawn and across the street to Stella's, a diner with local character and delicious food (try the buffalo chicken sandwich!). Hartland is very much a small town, and the locals are friendly and hard working. We are very much looking forward to joining Jill again this August for our first anniversary to stay in "our" room again.

As for the wedding itself-- it was wonderful, and our guests enjoyed themselves immensely. We held the ceremony under the 200+ year old maple tree in the yard, and the reception was in the dining room, library and courtyard garden. The sense of history made decorating simple-- we hardly did a thing! A few flowers and table centerpieces, and the library doubled as a fabulous dance floor with the furniture in small groupings to the side so that guests could watch the fun if they chose not to join in. Jill had all the amenities necessary, with helpful suggestions whenever we had a question.

If anyone would like to see more of our wedding pictures from Sumner Mansion, they are available at this public Facebook album: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2199236&id=39602266&l=596e80c00a

Room Tip: Spacious downstairs bedroom is the best!

“What an ideal place for a wedding!”

My son was married this August at the Mansion, his bride grew up "down the road" from it. Family and friends came from all over, Mom & myself from Florida. The giant maple tree makes the perfect backdrop for the ceremony. We all carried our chairs back to the garden tables or inside for dinner and then dancing in the library. Each morning, Jill, the new owner, prepared a delicious breakfast for us, then she proceeded to work all day setting up all the tables, chairs, table cloths, moving the library furniture and making the most useful suggestions - everything went sooooo smooth. Thank you for all that Jill! Keep up the good work, and for the insight into this historic mansion.

“Absolutely Perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 June 2010

What a wonderful experience we had staying at the Sumner Inn with owner Jill. The home is an historic site and Jill has it furnished with all kinds of interesting antiques and art. The first floor bedroom and bath were luxurious AND have easy access to the front door for taking the dogs out. Comfortable beds, great fireplaces, good breakfast every day! I particularly loved the library.

The Inn is easy to get to and close to the Saint Gaudens Museum and home. Great antiquing. I loved it!!

“Quaint and nice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 May 2010

Used to work for the Ron and mary louis and they were great people and gave me a free weddiing there with a band and a great food layout. I worked in the kitchen and mainly did the dishes and helped with desserts and salads and appetisers. They know how to puton a wedding and run a Inn.

“What a great find!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2009

There is a new owner at Sumner Mansion and it makes all the difference in the world! Jill is taking this historic old house and is bringing it back to life with panache. An antique dealer, she has brought her great taste and flair to every room in the house. Who could resist sleeping in a huge canopied bed in the room Lafayette slept in?! The garden is lovely. We couldn't be happier with the attention we got - and the mansion's location - not far from I-91, Woodstock and Dartmouth College.
