My husband treated us to a 3 night stay for the New Year at the Castle. Our check-in day was Friday, December 30th. He had requested “early check-in” and when we arrived around 1:30ish, we were happy to see that our room was ready and we could begin our mini-vacation. My husband also had booked a couples massage for us about 2 weeks prior to our arrival. He spoke directly with someone at the spa and made the appointment for Sunday, January 1st at 4:00. The person he spoke with at the spa told him they had plenty of openings on that day and even asked if he and I would mind a male masseuse to which my husband said we didn’t care who gave the massage. When we arrived up at the Castle after checking in down the hill at the Pointe, we were brought up to our room (we stayed in a suite – rooms 1 and 2). The room(s) was nice, plenty of space with the bedroom separate from the living room. The bathroom was sort of a culture shock for me as I am not used to the old fashioned chain pull toilet or a claw foot tub. I was kind of disappointed for the amount of money they charge for a room to see the numerous, large cracks in the bathroom floor. We did not eat dinner our first night at the Castle instead choosing to visit Sam’s Steakhouse. The food was good but I advise getting there when they first open as they do not take reservations and the place gets mobbed. My husband made us reservations for New Year’s Eve dinner in the restaurant at the Castle because we thought that would be most convenient and safe since we had planned on having some drinks with dinner. Each time we went out we kept checking to see if they would post a menu for dinner that evening but the only menu ever left out was their regular dinner menu so we went into our dinner blindly. The restaurant had 2 seating’s and we opted for the later seating which began at 9:00. We were brought to our table and handed our menus. After reading the menu (which was very difficult due to the extremely small print and low light room we were in), I looked up at my husband and said “what are we supposed to eat?” The menu was completely disappointing for two very simple meat and potatoes people. The menu was a four course meal with 3-4 choices from each category (appetizer, soup/salad, main course, dessert). Our waitress was not very accommodating especially after she was surprised to hear I did not want an appetizer because I did not like any of the choices but yet offered no alternative as I had heard the other waitress in the room offer to her tables. She actually didn’t warm up to us until she realized that we were ordering multiple drinks and given the price of them for the size of the drink, she knew they would bump up the bill total. Now I realize this was New Year’s and everyone bumps their prices up and gives less but the drinks were the size of a shot glass and they were $10 a piece! Two sips and these drinks were done. The only dinner choice my husband and I remotely liked was the Beef Wellington. I love filet mignon but not mushrooms so both my husband and I picked the meat out of the pastry and ate just the filet. The Beef Wellington was served with a couple asparagus pieces, one carrot piece and some kind of squash-like stalk and a dollop of mashed potatoes. The filet was a good size but as far as the potatoes, come on! The dessert choices were nice and actually the white/dark chocolate mousse dessert that I had was excellent. As I mentioned earlier, we had no idea what the menu was or what the cost was going to be but since it was New Year’s we knew to expect inflated prices but when the bill came and we saw that the food was $95 per person I was shocked. With the bar bill and tax our bill was $300.00. I cannot believe they would charge $95 per person along with charging $10 per drink. Needless to say, we were extremely disappointed and shocked. To cap all that off we headed back to our room where we proceeded to listen to the people in the room above us move furniture around at all hours of the evening/morning, etc. I am sure they weren’t moving furniture but that’s exactly what it sounded like went on for the three nights we slept there. My husband is fortunate enough to be able to sleep through anything, I however am not and the three nights sleeping there were not pleasant for me as every time I thought I might be able to fall asleep, they decided to either move the furniture or STOMP across the floor. It amazes me how rude people can be. On Sunday I was ready to go home but the only thing that kept me going was knowing we were scheduled for a massage that afternoon at 4:00. Around 3:45 we walked over to the spa to get ready for our appointment. We brought with us the appointment card given to us when we checked in two days prior. My husband gave the girl behind the desk our name and said we were there for a couples massage at 4. She said that she didn’t have anything in the computer for us and were we sure we had the right day. My husband said absolutely we had the right day and even told the girl that whoever he made the appointment with asked if we would mind a male masseuse. She was apologetic and we were able to get the massage credited back but needless to say, we were not very happy as we were both very much looking forward to the massage. When we got back to the room our phone rang and it was someone from the front desk calling to let us know that they had an opening for one and my husband was like “no thank you, what are we going to do with one appointment when there are 2 of us?” so instead they brought up to our room a bottle of wine. I could not wait to the next morning to get home as I had enough of everything. One thing I haven’t mentioned is the lack of HOT water in the bathroom. We never had hot water in the sink the whole time we were there and the shower? When I attempted to take a shower on Saturday prior to dinner, I had to let the water run for a good 15 minutes before lukewarm water came out and my poor husband had to hurry right after me to get what was left of the lukewarm water before his turned totally cold. We couldn’t take a shower at all on Sunday because the water would not turn warm/hot no matter how long I waited. Amazingly, someone was looking out for us because on Monday morning (the morning we were leaving) we had enough hot water for us both to take a nice shower. I am glad that my husband and I were able to get away for some time alone, I just wish our stay at the Castle was a little nicer for the price my husband paid for the three nights.
