“Comfortable Place - Thoughtful Hosts”

Stayed at Forty Putney on a two-day cross country skiing trip to Vermont, and I'm sure we'll be back.

Like many others who've written reviews for this B&B on Tripadviser, we were impressed with the attention to the small things that make for a very comfortable stay. Without diminishing their importance, we expect congenial hosts; a comfortable room and bed; a decent, well-appointed bathroom; a good breakfast. The small things however, like providing toiletries you might have forgotten, a refrigerator already stocked with soft drinks and a bottle of cold water, a basket of snack foods, a CD clock/radio, robes, a library of DVD's, these are things that say your hosts have been thoughtful about making your stay as comfortable as possible, and that’s what we found.

Forty Putney is within walking distance of Main St. in Brattleboro, a favorite of ours in Vermont. It's a step back into the feel of early 20th century life in a small New England city.

Keep a couple of things in mind. There's a hot tub in its own separate building behind the house. We will try it on our next visit since we forgot to bring bathing suits (that's something we wouldn't expect our hosts to provide, no matter how thoughtful). The second thing is that if you're using a GPS to find Forty Putney the address to use is 192 Putney. A Post Office thing, or something like that.

Room Tip: The suite is spacious with a good size sitting area (flat screen TV and fireplace and a large bathro...

“Perfect B&B for our romantic day”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

We just spent two days at Forty Putney Road, and got engaged in the beautiful gazebo overlooking the forest and the river.

The service was exceptional - in particular the innkeepers' attention to detail. The room was very quiet, spacious, warm (thanks to a great fireplace). The breakfast was delicious! The 2-course gourmet breakfast changes every day, and we loved it.
Wifi, DVDs, room snacks and drinks were all complimentary, which is nice.
Thanks for the perfect B&B experience!

Room Tip: The Maple room was beautiful, spacious, and quiet.

“A Breath of Fresh Air...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

Wanted to treat ourselves to a mini-getaway & couldn't have found a better spot! The room was perfect for us, the walk to town was just what we were hoping to find! The gourmet breakfast was nothing short of amazing, they offer a light option, but why bother! Nothing better than pumpkin pancakes after Thanksgiving! There was a light covering of snow that made it the grounds look magical. We indulged in the beer tasting offered on Saturdays & had so much fun! We sampled some wonderful beers and gained a wealth of knowledge (I will be ordering my brews a bit differently from now on!). There was information of the area provided, recommendations for dining and community info for an afternoon adventure. The local snacks provided were a hit with us! I am excited to return next year!

Having worked in the hospitality industry myself, I have a high level of expectations and they far exceeded them!

“Sumptuous and elegant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2011

Going to this B & B is a way to treat yourself to a thoroughly enjoyable experience. My husband and I just returned from our second visit. The owners, Tim and Amy, are attentive to every detail, including beautiful furnishings in the rooms, a library of DVDs, a well-stocked bar and a gourmet breakfast in the morning. The setting, right on the Connecticut River, is splendid--and we enjoyed the riverside walk that starts from the mansion's expansive backyard. We had a delicious dinner in one of Brattleboro's many good restaurants (Thai Bamboo), and all-in-all it was a great getaway. We plan to be back.

“The Most Wonderful Anniversary of My Life”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 December 2011 via mobile

First of all, I want to comment not only on the bed and breakfast, but the area itself. My boyfriend and I wanted a getaway, like most of us, and decided to go to Vermont; a choice I will never regret. The scenery was nothing but majestic and the people, including the inn hosts, were welcoming and kind. Downtown Brattleboro was just steps away from this place we couldn't help but call home. The bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept on and the room was nothing less than beautiful. The little nuances such as the event and restaurant books, comment book, open library, games and rooms made this tiny inn too perfectly wonderful to describe in full. We will without a doubt be coming back.
