We just stayed at the Latchis Hotel for four nights and really enjoyed it. We chose it for its spectacular location, its wonderful "deco-greco" design, and the fact that it is just so interesting, with its several theaters and its history. We arrived minutes before the elevator was officially working again after the damage suffered by this and several other businesses in flooding from Hurricane Irene. It was great to see things humming along, literally, since when we'd passed by during the short period when it was still closed. They did a stupendous job of getting this hotel back into shape. We chose a twin room which we found economical and quite fine. We loved the furniture, mid-century rock maple beds, dresser and desk. And the tub was to die for. They just don't make them like that any more: deep enough and with proper back support to make possible to take a truly relaxing bath; the shower worked great, too. We did find the mattresses a bit hard, but Jonathan was extremely helpful and fixed the problem promptly (they have mattress toppers that can be added). It was fun talking with him; his love of the place and knowledge of its history and workings makes the stay such a joy. He pulled out a binder full of old photos which were just fascinating to look at. If you need absolutely predictable sameness, you might do better to drive out of town, miss all the fun, and stay where it looks like any other city in the country. But there is only one really proper way to experience Brattleboro and that's from the heart of town, and the heart of Brattleboro is clearly the Latchis Hotel.
