The first (and best) stop on our Vermont vacation was The Four Chimneys Inn in the village of Old Bennington. Our stay was everything we had hoped for and more! We were greeted with a warm and welcoming smile by the owner, Lynne, who showed us the lay of the land (ice, coffee, dinner recommendations, etc.) Our room felt clean and renovated, while still having the elegance of a beautiful turn-of-the-century mansion. We had a very comfortable four-poster king bed, beautiful, spacious bathroom, hardwood floors, cable TV, free wifi, free DVDs etc. Breakfast each morning was delicious and served in a lovely, sunny dining room looking onto the snow-speckled grounds. Breakfast consists of your choice of several straight forward country-breakfast items such as buttermilk pancakes, eggs and potatoes as well as a more decadent blueberry French toast (which was fantastic!). Perhaps not as foofy as some other B&B’s breakfast fare, but we liked the simple deliciousness of it all and we liked having choices. And you get to sit at your own private table! We found the innkeepers, Lynne and Peter and the staff to be welcoming and helpful ambassadors of the area without being pushy or intrusive. Upon departing, Peter gave us a map and highlighted the must-sees on our way to the next stop on our journey. (Note that a few historic sites (Robert Frost House, McCullough mansion are closed in the winter.) We would definitely recommend the Four Chimneys Inn as a must-stay when you visit Vermont!
Room Tip: We peeked in several rooms and were surprised at how spacious they all were. Ask for one of the room...
