We were quite disappointed with our stay. The ranch portrays an image of a luxury resort, but they do not treat their guests like you would expect for this type of resort. There is an unwelcoming sort of feel in the place. As an example, they have a beautiful great room that would be nice to sit and read in, and according to info in the room, they state you can have tea or coffee any time of the day. When we asked where it was, the staff told us to knock on the kitchen door and ask the staff to make us some. Why not just have a station with a selection of drinks available every day? It seems like they make these things more difficult than they should be. Same thing for bathrobes, you have to go downstairs and ask for them. Who thinks of this before actually taking a bath!? We ate dinner there one night and it was just a very average meal (I'm being kind), typical of diner food, yet they are charging $25 a plate for food. You'll spend the same amount at Cafe Diablo and be much much happier! Wish we would have eaten at Cafe Diablo both nights. Also, the wait staff was very rude. It feels like the hotel is really trying to cut corners, but still portray this image of a luxury resort.
Also, as others have noted, the rooms are quite small, there is really no sitting area in most of them for reading, and the walls are extremely thin. We were right next to the stairs and could hear everyone coming up and down. The location of the lodge is gorgeous, and we had so much fun in town and hiking at Capitol Reef that we know we will go back to the area, so we began searching for other hotels. We went and looked at the Torrey Schoolhouse Bed and Breakfast and the feeling there is completely different. It's a beautiful building, right in town, with nice light and open rooms and breakfast included for a much lower price. If there were a few more places like this in Torrey, the Lodge at Red River Ranch would either go out of business or have to change their ways.
