“A Disappointment...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

I usually stay at one of the nicer hotel chains due to their consistency of product-you know you will have good service, good beds, good hotel and transport options, etc. The hotel options in the Provo area are limited so I chose to stay at this Marriott even though it was not the hotel recommended by the conference I was attending. They noted that their lobby was being renovated on the website, but the notice understates the situation.

The lobby renovation has dramatically limited their restaurant, bar and workout facility at this time (they say it will be completed by April). These all have been relocated to smaller rooms in the convention center, but they are an attempt to provide a minimal service at this point in time. The workout room was a major disappointment for me. The minimal room they relocated only had two treadmills, two recumbent bikes and a small stand of barbells to use. It was hot and stuffy in the room and a portable room fan was the only thing moving air around the room to cool it. The front desk apologized and offers guests a complimentary pass to a local Gold's Gym as an alternative, but this was a mile away and I really had no desire to leave the hotel at 5 am, in a strange city, to do my workout, so I made the most of what they had on hand.

The rooms were similar to what I found in the lobby. They had been remodeled, but only partially (the bed, bathroom, furnishings and electronics had been updated, but the old, stale-smelling, dirty carpeting remained. It's almost like they ran out of money in the budget and only completed part of the project.

For business travelers, the concierge lounge on the 9th floor was nice. The staff was very helpful and friendly and did their best to make up for the hotels dreary appearance and upkeep. I spent a lot of time in the lounge because the rest of the hotel smelled musty and it was as far away from the noise in the lobby that I could get. One major detractor was that the hotel is supposed to be no smoking, yet I could smell fresh cigarette smoke in my room and in the hallway every day and I hate this!

I wouldn't recommend avoiding this hotel to other travelers, but I can say that I won't go back for a few years until the renovations are completed. It's overpriced for the condition of what you get and it doesn't live up to the Marriott name and reputation for quality.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the high floors to get good views of the mountains. Ask for an east facing room f...

I appreciate your comments and positive words about the hotel staff and their friendliness. Your particular recognition of the Concierge staff is very much appreciated and I will pass along your remarks to the team.

As you noted we are upgrading the hotel. We have recently updated all guestroom bathrooms and have upgraded Floors 7, 8 & 9 with showers. We will also install new furniture and televisions in the next few months.

The fitness center is being worked on and should be completed by mid-March. The new fitness center will be larger, have all new fitness equipment and additional space for floor exercises. I’m confident that when you return you will be pleased with the outcome.

Once again thank you for the comments.
Best

“Not good not bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

Rooms nice but a bit dated. Food service was horrible. Food inedible, one of the worst breakfasts I have had in years. For the money not bad, just eat somewhere else.

“Still the best choice”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Even when the lobby, restaurant, bar are under reconstruction and even when the pool, gym and sauna are unavailable the Marriott is still the best choice around Provo. There is just not much else.

“Stay somewhere else”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

The people we dealt with were friendly enough, but there was not much they could do in this miserly and mismanaged place. When we arrived at 6:30 in the evening, we could hear drilling and hammering in the building. The front desk promised to stop the noise, explaining that the construction was only supposed to take place from 8am to 6pm. None of this construction had been mentioned when we booked or checked it. Anyhow, the noise went on for another hour. At 8am the next day it started in again, making the room unpleasant for the entire day. Aside from the construction project, we heard lots of noise from banging doors and loud conversations because the building was constructed so poorly. The American Grille restaurant was hopeless; the waitress came back twice to say they were out of dishes on the menu, and the "chef" transformed the rare steak I ordered into well-done shoe leather.

“Best stay in Provo, Utah”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

We stay here a couple of visits/year--our favorite being during Christmas vacation when most of the students have vacated and we have both the hotel & city to ourselves. Can't beat the pricing on this hotel (especially if you are a marriott rewards member or you get an internet special) and the location is perfect. We upgrade to a suite & that makes it great for having guests over. The rooms are comfortable but a little dated. It's quiet & friendly. The breakfast buffet is very good, albeit pricey. (We usually just go to nearby Kneaders for scrumptious bakery goodies). The pool/jacuzzi is never crowded & a nice way to unwind. Workout room is adequate. We don't stay anywhere else as this place meets all of our needs & they have never let us down.

Room Tip: Rooms higher up & away from the elevator are quiet. Try to get a mountain view.
