“great value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2010

We stayed here with our 9-yr-old for a ski vacation. One problem was that the door to our room (226) was not shielded from the front desk, so we heard all the conversations there through the night. So be careful to check the layout before you select a room.

Other than that, we give this place solid marks. Beds were good. Rooms were clean. Breakfast was good. Make-your-own waffles are a hit with the kids. Front desk manager was super. We rode the light rail from town. We took the ski bus to Alta. Bus ride is at least 50 minutes, so be prepared. Sushi place nearby was good.

“Great Location, Great Value, Great Stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2010

After I made the reservation I checked trip advisor and then worried about my selection. I decided to keep the reservation anyway because it was in my budget and we would just keep our expectations low. I was traveling alone with my teenage daughter and 10 year old son--dad couldn't come on this trip. If worse came to worse we would just change properties. Boy were we pleasantly surprised! The property was well maintained, was in a great commercial area---NOT an industrial area as one reviewer stated. It was back off the main street and close enough to the freeway for convenience, but far enough away to not have any of the noise. The surrounding residential areas were nice and well-maintained.

I found the location to be very safe. It was well-lit not only at the property but all of the surrounding businesses. I had to go out to my car at 11:30 p.m. and did not feel compromised at all.

We stayed in a mini suite which was very roomy and did not feel like a typical hotel/motel room. The website said it had a pull-out sofa which my son was going to sleep on, but while checking in we were told that the Best Western website had not been updated and that there was only a recliner and no sofa. I was offered a two-bed room but didn't want the smaller space. Cindy, the front desk clerk then suggested a roll-away bed and said it would be no charge. That was a great solution. It worked very well in the room and did not limit the space we wanted in the larger room. It also contained a microwave and small refrigerator. We found the room to be clean. I did not worry about being in my bare feet. It seemed to be recently remodeled. The TV was small with limited channels, but we weren't there to watch TV!

The lobby area was nice with a computer availble for use. The breakfast room was cozy, but well maintained and cared for. We were there 2 mornings and always found a clean table. The attendant did a good job of keeping up with the busy space. Fruit, instant oatmeal, dry cereal, juices, boiled eggs, milk, toast and make-your-own waffles made for a varied and filling breakfast.

The Trax station was very convenient, just across the street. It was nice to take into Salt Lake City and not have to pay for parking downtown. An all-day pass is available for $5.00 and can be used for the buses as well. We did not experience any problem with noise from the train.

There are many restaurants and food outlets within walking and driving distance.Grocery stores, WalMart and Target are also in close driving range in case you need to get something you forgot to pack.

My daughter had to catch a plane and I found access to the airport very convenient. It was only about 15 minutes away from the Inn.

One disappointment--We booked this property because of the swimming pool. We were disappointed to find it is undergoing major rehabilitation. If a pool is important to you contact them to make sure it open. I had an upset 10 year old who was bribed all during our 8 hour car trip with a swimming pool at the end of the drive.

“Worn Out Hotel in a Bad Neighborhood”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2009

The hotel itself is a bit frayed around the edges, but this could be overlooked if the hotel were located in a better neighborhood. As it is, I was unhappy leaving my car in the parking lot overnight. We'd stayed at this hotel a couple years ago and had walked to breakfast at the nearby Midvale Mining Company (which was fine), but this time I was leery of leading my family on that same trek to the restaurant.

As it was, we decided to leave the hotel very early in the morning, so we awoke at 2 a.m. to pack up the car and leave. At this hour one of the hotel guests was outside in the parking lot driving his motorcycle aimlessly around the area. Another room had a door partially open, with a few strung-out looking men coming and going. Another man was walking the halls in a daze. All of this confirmed my impressions that this hotel was not very family-friendly, and we were glad to leave the hotel when we did.

The Salt Lake City area is full of hotels that are decently priced. Take my advice and book a room somewhere other than this joint.

By the way, this hotel confirmed my opinion about the Best Western chain. The chain has a lot of nice hotels, but it's also burdened with a lot of dumps. The chain ought to decide whether it wants to run a line of quality hotels or not. As it is, booking a hotel with Best Western is a real crap shoot. You just don't know what you're going to get until you get there, and by then it's too late if you've already booked a room and set your plans.

“Rude and Indifferent.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2008

Actually, we did not stay there. Tried to check in, but were ignored by desk clerk. Decided, quickly, that we could probably find a better location. Overall, the hotel gave the impression of being a genteel flop house. Neighborhood is seedy; parking lot does not appear secure. Unless you are poor or desperate, find another place!

“very rundown and very sub-standard hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 June 2008

The Best Western Executive Inn in Midvale, Utah is very rundown and sub-standard for Best Western. The hotel is in a very unattractive industrial area with truck stops, gasoline stations, truck yards, etc around it. The hotel is very rundown and very sub-standard from what you normally expect from Best Western. The breakfast is very poor and is served in a separate, small, poorly appointed room which appears to have been minimally converted from storage or some other purpose. The rates are far higher than the property deserves. The poor condition of the property does not come through on the Best Western web site. Avoid the hotel if at all possible. Best Western should discontinue the franchise or demand the property be renovated. The Best Western Cottonwood is only a few miles further south and is a tremendously nicer hotel. After arrival, we cancelled our reservation at Executive Inn and went to Cottonwood, despite a higher price.

  • Liked — Nothing, it is a dump in a dumpy area with no restaurants or shopping close by
  • Disliked — it is dirty and rundown
