“Like A College Rental House”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 May 2007

Don't be fooled by the photos on their website, this place is furnished more like a college rental, down to the worn raggedy towels, missing curtains, and flabby blue overstuffed naugahyde couch. The structure itself still has integrity and charm, sitting on the main street with a front porch and rocking chairs. But it needs some plastering and paint and the cheap dark paneling throughout the upstairs (including a double accordion dark panel door with a closet full of somebody's dusty shirts) needs to go. In the dining area there was little privacy as one entire curtain was missing and the other window had only sheers (a home for troubled youth across the street, not the best feeling.) The kitchen seemed to be the place where unwanted gifts go to die--as well as numerous old sports bottles and scruffy plastic novelties. An adult really needs to go through and just toss much of it out. Overall, the house had a schizophrenic feel to it--filled with depression-era pink glass and a gargantuan television. With some work and this could be a unique and lovely place to stay, simple and clean. As for a view from the house, it's of the main street in this small town.

“Fun step back in time”

In February 2005 my husband Jim and I stayed in the Vagabond Inn in Escalante. It is actually a historical house owned by Escalante Outfitters, a quarter mile down the road. When you stay at the Inn you actually get an entire house! It has a downstairs bedroom with a queen size bed and two huge bedrooms upstairs, each with a queen bed and a twin bed.(Sleeps 8 comfortably). There is a full bathroom, kitchen, dining room and living room. The back patio has a grill you can use as well. It would be a great place to stay with an extended family. The big kitchen is the best-equipped I have ever seen in a rental unit; TONS of plates, glasses, goblets, cooking equipment, etc. The house has a 60's sort of atmosphere; kind of like staying at your aunt's place while she's out of town. It is very clean and the living room is comfy with a huge sofa and chair, t.v., VCR, etc. There is a lot to do in the Escalante area including snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, hiking, exploring slot canyons and waterfalls. In winter you have every hiking trail to yourselves. The Calf Creek trail leads to great waterfalls, and if you sign in at the trail head you can pick up a brochure that points out neat things along the way, like petroglyphs and a food cache built by the Ancient Ones. The scenery is spectacular and the people in the town are very friendly and helpful. Steve Roberts, owner of The Vagabond Inn and Escalante Outfitters, recently purchased these properties and has worked hard to make them first-rate. Jim and I highly recommend this area in the winter. It's great year-round, but in winter you can really appreciate the solitude. You can enjoy snow in the higher elevations, drive "down" a couple thousand feet and have balmy weather perfect for hiking. If you have any questions please email me at brighamwriter@yahoo.com.
