My wife and I, both active birders, frequently come to the Lower Rio Grande Valley to enjoy the hundreds of different species of birds that seem to be everywhere throughout the region. We love the Valley but, for any number of reasons, we had never stayed in Weslaco before, chosing instead McAllen, Mission, or Harlingen, as a base of operations before our recent ten-day stay at Weslaco's Holiday Inn Express. How glad we are that we decided to change! It is safe to say that from now on, we've found close to the perfect spot to stop whenever we return to the region--and we will, hopefully, many times in the years to come--and we would encourage others to consider doing the same.
The Holiday Inn Express in Weslaco is located within sight of and less than a half-mile away from Highway 83, the main highway that links all the Valley's major cities. Easy on and off access is simple and because the city is located more or less half-way between Harlingen and McAllen-Mission, it is quite simple to get to either within a few minutes while using the HIE as a central site. The hotel is also only two miles away from one of the region's best state parks: Estero Llano Grande. The Frontera Audubon reserve and Weslaco's Valley Nature Center are also only a few miles further afield.
From the moment that we arrived at the HIE, rather late one evening, until we checked out more than a week later, we were treated by the desk staff as "members of the family." Their greetings were sincere and welcoming every day; clearly such friendliness made our stay even more enjoyable that it might have been. The hotel's rooms, at least the large suite that we had, were pleasantly appointed and exceedingly comfortable. Our king-sized bed was close to perfect; the bathroom, often so small in similar hotel/motels, was large if not spacious, and the small kitchen area with its refrigerator and microwave a welcome "plus." There is a small pool, which we did not use but we saw a great many others who seemed to enjoy that amenity as well.
Perhaps the nicest thing about the HIE--among all the many nice things--was its breakfast each morning. Though, somewhat ironically, there never were any grapefruits available in a region that is probably best known for its wonderfully tasty red fruits, just about everything else one might want was readily avaiilable. On any given day, there were scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, other hot items, cold cereals or oatmeal, four or five different breads, muffins, bagels and the like, several kinds of coffee, four or five different teas, juices of all kinds, fresh fruits, and on and on. It would be hard to imagine that even the most picky person could ever have left the relatively spacious breakfast room in the hotel unsatisfied.
Bottom line: The Holiday Inn Express in Weslaco is a special place. It offers excellent accommodations at reasonable rates. It is centrally located to stores (the large Rio Grande Premium Outlet Mall is less than 5 miles away; there is a large Walmart and a brand-new J. C. Penney's less than that in the other other direction) and restaurants--both fast-food and several quite nice sit-down ones as well. Mexican border cities, for those who are interested, are literally just down the road--Nuevo Progresso only 7 miles south. As I noted already, we'll be back and enthusiastically so when we come.
