We moved to the Palms after staying at the Holiday Inn Express two nights - where we had a nice room, but terrible internet access - and no beach contact! The beach was two blocks away down a paved street. We could see a bit of water from our 4th floor room, but that was it....We had lunch at the Palms, found they had rooms available, so we packed up and moved for the remaining night, just to check it out for future visits.
Quietstay (May 2011) has provided an exhaustive description of the room, and ours varied only slightly. The bed was effectively a double, not a queen, but ours was not quite as soft as Quietstay's. We had four glasses! There are no utensils, cutlery, etc., so if you want to eat something you need to bring your own or venture out to borrow a spoon or fork from the café. The sink is about the size of a small bar sink. Our refrigerator, however, was full size. I ate my breakfast bar in the room, but cannot imagine cooking and eating a meal there unless storms were brewing offshore! I agree about the view, but in the absence of an elevator a ground-floor room might be more desirable. In any case you can head for the café, have some coffee, and enjoy the view from there! The setup was comfortable for just sitting and reading some email (EXCELLENT WiFi service!) before going out. Our room had a walk-in shower, which was fine.
The office staff were very friendly, as were the café folks. We ate our dinner in the café and the food was well-prepared; the menu was not as extensive as that of some of the larger restaurants, but it was a pleasure to just walk down to the café! There is a strip of flowering plants between the Palms and the sandy beach, and it must be a spectacular sight when they are in full flower. You can walk directly to the beach - bring some kind of beach shoes, as the first section of the path has a hard surfaced cloth laid on top that is very painful for bare feet. There's a hose to rinse off your feet when you return (the sands are slightly oily (remember all that drilling in the Gulf!) and you'll leave ugly marks on the floor if you don't clean your feet. This does not affect the quality of the beach or the water!
There are hooks outside your room for drying bathing suits and beach towels (don't forget to bring towels!).
The Palms is a no-frills, relaxing place - what a beach stay should be! We expect to go back to SPI - not at spring break! - and would be happy to stay at the Palms again. The price-quality ratio is excellent!
Room Tip: If you need a queen-size, select the king-size room. Second floor rooms at the beach end give you a...
