“Great beach hotel for the price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 June 2010

I have stayed at this hotel several times over the years whenever the Sheraton next door wasn't available. We love the pool and the beach access and when my daughter was younger, the Kids Eat Free (when it was the Holiday Inn) was great. Yeah the rooms are nothing special but we stay here for the great beach access, period. If you want luxury you'll need to look elsewhere but if you plan to spend most of your time at the beach, it's fine.

I will say that on my first visit many years ago, I had $200 taken from my luggage and nothing was done about it. I have used the in-room safe every year since.

“Stay somewhere else (formerly Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort)”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2008

Be very wary about staying at this hotel. My wife and I stayed over Memorial Day weekend and her engagment ring was stolen from our hotel room. We were put into a room witha broken safe and we asked that it be fixed on the first day. It wasn't and 2 days into our trip we discovered that the maid had gone through our bags. We immediately reported it to the manager and filed a police report. They said that they would pursue the maid but nothing ever happened. The hotel was unwilling to take responsiblity even though they never fixed the safe like we had asked. After many calls to the management with no help at all, I filed a claim with my insurance hoping that they would go after the hotel. They filed a claim with the hotels insurance and after about a month they came back saying they would not accept any responsibility because they did not believe their employee had done anything. There had been no sign of break-in and the scan on the door lock showed that the maid was the only other person in the room. This hotel refuses to take responsibility for its own employees even though it was clear who stole the ring. If you want to stay in South Padre, stay somewhere else. Somewhere where the management actually cares about its guest. This place used to be called the Holiday Inn Sunspree resort and it is clear that the management took a dive when they changed names.

“great service, good hotel”

I just got married and the wife a California girl never set foot on the Texas coast so I took her to SPI for the honeymoon. We got in late and did not know the hotel change names to South Padre Island Resort. I called the main desk they gave me directions and when we arrived the check in manager and desk clerk were very friendly and saved me 150 dollars (due to using a debit/credit card)! They let us pick our room and we got the top floor right on the beach! Incredible view!! I believe if you’re friendly and polite everyone around you will act the same way. That also goes with being rude, you act negative you get a negative result (bad service & rude staff).

The only complaint is the bed & food, the bed was a little hard and the fruit for breakfast from room service was a little old and/or tuff. We had an awesome time there on the beach and at the pool. The bartender at the pool was super friendly and helpful she can make some good mean drinks too!! All the staff was very courteous and informative about how to get around paying and arm and a leg for food and fun on the island (tourist traps).

For as old as the place is it is in good condition considering SPI is one of the most popular spring brake destinations in the US. To sum it all up, the hotel was on par with the amount that I paid and the service was above and beyond what I paid. I am defiantly staying there again!!

We have never been to SPI before, so was'nt too sure of where to stay...all the hotels seemed aged and tripadvisor reviews were varied. Note that this hotel is now called the South Padre Beach Resort - I found out that Holiday Inn dropped them because they weren't up to standard...If you got the rooms super cheap and just wanted any place on the beach - they should be fine, but otherwise - I would recommend staying elsewhere....we requested connecting rooms - when we got there at about 9pm to check in, they only showed us having reserved one room, but were still able to give us two rooms that were next to each other. The TV in one room did not work and front desk said that maintenance had gone home so we would have to wait til next day..they fixed tv next day, but still could not get on demand movies. Parking was a bit sparse. There was a roach in one room. The one elevator that worked was clanky and painfully slow...we (and most other people) used the stairs most of the time (5th floor). the hallways were hot - like a heater was on. The air conditioner was really, really loud. the pools were cloudy. there were stains on the walls and carpets. you got dripped on from a leak in the ceiling if you were sitting on the toilet. The beds were extremely hard - (and I usually like a really firm mattress). The shower/tub was kind of just ewwwww. The walkway to the beach is a little stinky maybe due to the drainange ditch full of stagnant water...see pic..On a positive note..the linens seemed clean and the staff was nice and tried to be helpful. There was a fridge and microwave in the room. The restaurant was sufficient and had an average breakfast buffet. All in all - this hotel really needs to be completely refurbished or just torn down and started over.

  • Liked — location - on the beach
  • Disliked — old and not well-maintained

“Different Name, Same Great Place!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2008

I stay here every year, and it has always been great. The desk and bar staff are the best. The rest has good food, not the best ever, but it is good. Any problems we encounter are fixed, and any requests we have are fulfilled. The pools are great, and this time they offered a real nice deal. $99/night, with free breakfast vouchers for each morning, and this was during Memorial Day Weekend, when prices are usually doubled that anywhere else! I understand that this isnt a five star resort, so they are not going to have the best everything. We stay at the MGM Grand in Vegas every year, and we understand that both this resort cant compare, but we still love the cozy, homely feeling we get from the place and the staff. We will always continue to come back here!
