I normally take negative reviews with a grain of salt, because people who had a bad experience are much more likely to be motivated to get online a write a review. But take need when a hotel has 67 one-star ratings.
I didn't *see* any bugs, and it seemed clean, except for that certain amount of grime you're just never going to get out of a time capsule room that hasn't been touched since the 70s. The loud window unit AC worked. It is in fact a block and a half from the beach (but so are many other hotels). We didn't die. And without exaggeration, those are the most positive things I can dredge up about the Bates Hotel, I mean, Rock Cottages.
My husband and I booked this room at the very last minute, as in 5pm on the Friday we showed up, because it was THE ONLY place in Port Aransas with vacancy. And now we know why.
Our first thought when we pulled up, after dark, was "Oh, Lord, we're going to die." We didn't, but only because the parking lot was full of nice cars, leading me to believe that many others had desperately needed a last minute room and took what they could get. I imagine that's the only reason they're still open. In the off-season they must be deserted.
Service is non-existent: no maid service on weekends, towel exchange only if you go to the office, not a single cup or utensil of any kind in the room, no clock, rock hard bed, sandpaper towels, shower head at eye-level (I'm 5'7"), weather stripping on the door consists of a rolled up towel placed in front of the door, checkout is dropping your key through an open window to the office. We were charged us in advance, because I imagine they have a problem with people spending one night and then getting the h*ll out. I would have slept on the floor of the Holiday Inn across the street if I hadn't already been charged for the room.
