Just returned from a one week holiday at the gren tinerfe, we booked a discounted deal with Portland Direct and the room we were given was an older room that did not match the Portland website, but in view of the previous review about the glass door on the bathroom in the new rooms perhaps this was the better option and was more than adequate for us. The room was clean, there was a hair gryer in the bathroom, air con (but NO thermostat), TV with sport/CNN/BBC world news channels in English, plus AXN which has some English speaking programs i.e. CSI. The safe was 15 euros for the week (plus 10e returnable deposit). You could request a mini bar, but as we did not use this I do not know how much this would cost? The hotel itself is right on the beach with a walk way down a few steps directly from inside the hotel onto the promenade. We walked right the way into los cristianos along the beach front which is quite flat and even and also in the other direction as far as the Riu palace hotel, still a nice walk, but a lot more steps along this route, there are lots & lots of restaurants in both directions, but you will be asked many times by every restaurant you pass if you are looking for meal, this can be tiring after a while, but did have English style pot of tea and cake in the cozy cafe next to the hotel. The hotel also runs a free animation program, they play French bowls on the beach every morning around 10.30am, we did this once and we also tried rifle shooting and archery, other games that we did not take part in include tennis/billards/pin pong etc. There was some evening entertainment 9.45pm in the bar downstairs, the Drifters tribute act were the best from the acts we saw. This hotel is above the area casino and although we did not use it there are free entrance cards within the hotel. There are 3 pools, the larger ones were to cold to swim in, but the smaller pool is heated slightly. The restaurant was buffet style and typical of other 4* hotels. All staff we encounted were polite and friendly and even though this is an older hotel and a little tired it has a relaxed atmosphere and we would have no problem returning to this hotel. We did walk one evening to the safari shopping centre were the fountain performs to music/lights on the hour, there is also a mini golf place near this that is open late. Tenerife though has a major problem with aggressive time share reps like no place we have ever visited before, they are a complete menace and this alone would make me think twice before visiting what should be a lovely holiday resort.
