My girlfriend and I stayed here from 5-12th December. We arrived about 6 hours late as our flight was delayed from Manc. As soon as we arrived, the fellow on reception allowed us to store our bags in a safe room and head straight to the buffet, which i thought was good of him, and we were starving. First impressions of the food werent very good, as there was just dregs of things left at that time. We ate and just went straight to bed once we found our room. A month before we were due to go on holiday, I'd emailed the hotel and requested a balcony with a sea view, but it seemed like they ignored that as we had another hotel right in front of us! Next morning we were pleasantly surprised though, and the ocean was there, just behind the hotel.
As with the sea view, our impressions of the food had been wrong the evening before! The food was good and there was lots of it! In fact, as soon as the restaurant stops serving breakfast, the pool bar opens and starts serving burgers and chips and salad etc. There was water, pop, wine, juice and beer on tap all day long from multiple points. Dont pay any attention to the whingers complaining about the lager- Tropical, its as nice as any other cheap lager you drink in the uk- carlsberg, becks etc. They charge 2 euros for bottled water from machines and if you try and fill your empty bottle up from the water tap, a fat man (we think was the manager, as he didn't appear to do anything except people watch) will jump out from nowhere and shout at you! Later we found out that fresh water is quite sparse in gran canaria as it only rains for something like 2 weeks of the year!
The hotel is in a good spot right at the top of the hill, gorgeous views! However this means it is very windy. We found 2 beaches, 1 to the right, the main San agustin beach was nice, but there is a hidden gem to the left! We found a small beach/alcove that no one seemed to know about, except one guy sunbathing in the corner with his todger out. Other than that it was just us! (See the cracking photo). Don't listen to the people complaining about the walk down the steps to San Agustin beach, if youre not disabled, not old, not fat or lazy, the steps are fine and good exercise with lovely views as you walk down.
There wasn't many places to eat in San agustin, but we did find a lovely place at the bottom of the hill, I recommend it highly. Also the open roof place on the beach was good as well, go for the mixed seafood grill! Other than that you have to go into playa de ingles for more choice.
Don't go to the waterpark, it's dreadful, the slides are rubbish and rickety, and everything is waaaay overpriced. We got bored and left there after about an hour. Went back to the hotel for free food and drink, instead of paying 4 euros for a burger that doesn't even come with chips!
DO go on the market trip to puerto de mogan, it's a beautiful place - just google image it and you'll see for yourself.
All in all we were pleased with the hotel, the staff are helpful and friendly, and it's definitely one for the kids, we were thinking of bringing our younger brothers and sister with us next time. San agustin certainly doesnt have much in the way of culture, but its perfect for a relaxing getaway in the sun, just before our cold rainy Xmas.
