In the heart of San Agustin, on Gran Canaria's south coast is a home away from home for travellers in the know. Yes, it is 4 start big hotel but the service is top and family enviroment.
We stayed one week (in January 2012) in a family suite with 2 toddlers and an infant. The vacation was excellent. The staff is great, knowledgeable, attentive, courteous and friendly in every area of the hotel we tried.
The cleaning lady went above and beyond to ensure our stay was pleasant. She actually provided a superb service and even surprised us with garden flowers and towels folded into flowers!
The staff at reception are polite and very helpful. We asked of advice, tips and help since we had a rental car and didn't know the island at all. They were happy to assist us with any questions we had regarding the hotel, trips, or Gran Canaria in general.
We could only managed to attend two entertainment acts since we three small kids they get tired easily and ask of going to bed early. There were professional acts and a good show for families (Eagles show and magic). It was fantastic and we all enjoyed.
The restaurang staff were amazing. My wife reacts to the cow milk protein (Milk protein allergy), and therefore we indicated this the very first day we tried the restaurang. The restaurang manager called one of the cooks who explained which food contained no cow milk based products. My wife asked of a milk free desert and every meal she got one specially prepared for her. Also, all staff was attentive and helpful and our kids loved them.
The buffet food was good, with a large selection and quality. The fresh vegetable and fruit were great. Note that most fruit is from Canary Islands. A must papayas, Canary Islands bananas ("Platanos", shorter and much more sweat than the banana!), oranges (Not nice looking since are not treated but surprinsingly juicy and tasty), guavas.. There is fried counter where you can find meat, fish and at breakfast eggs, pancakes, and churros (A Spanish doughnut). There were theme night dinners from Italian and French to typical Canarian cuisine (Don't miss the former which includes live music). One thing I particularly missed was fish choices for main dish (My wife does not like fish at all so no issue for her). Usually, there were only two choices, one in the buffet and one in the fried counter but repetitive choices (perch, pangasius and tunna). Meat selection was however large most of the days.
One thing to improve is the all-inclusive offer. All-inclusive only offers one choice of beer and wine (wine served by glass, though bottle is opened in front of you and the one provided is actually good). No other alcoholic drink is provided free-of-charge (one gets 50% discount though). All other hotels we have gone all-inclusive offered at least a selection of beer and wine not just one. Also, no all bars in the hotel provide all-inclusive service. This was troublesome when our kids wanted to drink and the closest bar did not provide all-inclusive service (even water had to be paid).
There are several pools. All clean and warm (so no problem with the kids) but the roof one which is very cold. My wife went up to try it and could only managed to stay in 3m. However, the roof top terrace is lovely and provide a magnificient view including Playa del Inglés. Note that sunbeds there are unfortunately not free of charge (even if you go all-inclusive).
The hotel has a kids club (Tinas' club) which I should not forget to mention (Important for families with children!). Our toddlers loved this.
We could not enjoyed the spa facilities since our infant (3 months) was not admitted, though toddlers can be actaully cared while parents are in the spa. This surprised us since we made clear that we did not want to have our baby in the pools but just near to us in case he needed to be feeded or nappy changed. Next time. One thing to note is that when checking with the staff at spa one of our toddlers came crying with blood in one of his foot. The staff immediately directed us to the spa doctor who took care of our kid. Again amazing service!
I would also like to mention one last thing about this hotel and its top service. Toilets are new and clean. They also do have baby changing facilities. However, we noticed, when changing our baby's nappy, that there was no trash to dispose it! We informed the staff and a brand new Brabantia trash liter was wall mounted the following day. Staff is willing to walk the extra mile.
Finally, I would definitely recommend this excellent hotel and my kids are already asking me "Dad, when are we getting back to Gran Canaria?". We will be back since we loved the hotel.
