“Best location on Gran Canaria!”

Originally booked Dunas Mirador Half Board only to arrive and find they were full! They transferred us free of charge to the Dunas Don Gregory and not only upgraded us free of charge to All Inclusive but also put us in a top floor suite which balcony doors opening to the gorgeous sea view.

The room was large and cleaned daily. The all inclusive meals for me were ok, there was a large selection of salads, hams, cheeses bread , chicken etc etc

Drinks were great although if your all inclusive and go to the bar they only allow you to have whichever cocktail is the daily special you cant have anything you like from the cocktails! Also if your not German or Spanish you get you cocktail (poured from a pre prepared jug) into a straight glass. Where as German and Spanish guests (theres a lot of them!) get freshly made with umbrellas etc! Couldnt really work that one out!

The location is amazing, straight on the beach front that stretches all the way to Maspolamas. I would recommend the long walk up the beach to the sand dunes they are out of this world (although be careful as further on is the nudist beach!)

Across from the hotel are bars and restaurants with a good choice of chinese/italian/spanish etc (I recommend the all you can eat chinese buffet)

Overall a great location easy to get to from the hotel (pay attention to the junction numbers on the motorway and you cant miss it)

Stayed for only 3 nights in February but the weather was 28c and didnt rain (came back sunburnt after only 3 nights)

Going back for 10 nights in September

highly recommended to everyone (mostly older couples and German / Spanish guests)
Most English people seem to stay in Playa Ingles

PS If your hiring a car pay special attention to the terms and conditions some require you pay for the full tank of petrol when you take the car and if you dont use it all you get no cash back(Its only a small island - and we drove around it in less than 2 hours). We used Auto Reisen , simply return the car with the same amount of fuel, you also get a full damage waiver and free 2nd driver as standard.

“Would never go to this hotel again - not recommended”

We ended up at this hotel having booked the Dunas Suites in Maspalomos and being told there was no room for us. To their credit they said they would upgrade us to all inclusive but having been booked in, found we hadn't been. We then had to ask for the all inclusive bands but later found that this was not reflected on our hotel card which resulted in one of many arguments in the restaurant when the head waiter queried our wine bill. The first day there was a big argument with the pool attendant who insisted that my 6 year old was not allowed in the pool with a hat on or the top part of his swim suit. I complained to reception but still had the embarassment of being shouted at again by this man at the poolside. I was shouted at by one of the pool bar staff by taking a serviette to mop up a spilled drink. On several occasions I was ignored in the pool bar and never served. One evening, my order was taken but no drinks appeared. After 20 minutes I gave up! Staff in the lounge bar were also rude and ignored us. Speaking to other guests, they had similar experiences. A lovely hotel, in a lovely location but no idea how to treat their guests. I really wished we had gone back to the other hotel when a room became free.

“Good If Your Over 65 And Not British!”

We arrived in gran canaria to be moved to the dunas don gregory which we thought we were goin to benefit from, however we found that the staff are very unhelpfull, rude and can't understand english! We had clothes packed for previous hotel and arrived here to see they had a dress code for dinner, wen goin for dinner was turned away by a man who was director - more rude than ever a director! We went to reception to explain our situation and tell them we never had long trousers just 3/4 lengths, the man didn't understand and jst kept nodding his head to say "yes its fine go in!" We were then greeted by director again to say no I am director u can't come in then decided only tonight but never again! After been sat down we were made very uncomfortable and wasn't impressed with the food little choice, look warm and nothing to tell you what was what and the chef at hot plate station didn't speak a word of english! During our stay we realised not only the staff couldn't speak english, all other residents were mostly german oh and over 65. Not 1 resident looked safe to be aloud out without a carer we felt we were in a care home! Eventually durin our week stay we met 2 woman from ireland who felt the exact same as us and not happy! All in all was nice room, pool and we loved our weather but hated rest and would not come back!!

“Breakfast in a pigstye!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2011

The Don Gregory is without doubt one of the best positioned hotels I have ever stayed at, right on the beach with good views over the beach, however the back of the hotel is slightly spoilt by the tatty and getting worse "shopping" centre.
Rooms are basic but clean but could do with re decoration recent re-vamp of bathrooms was pointless fitting tatty cream plastic to marble...why? and removal of lobby door.
We visited for our 3rd time in January 11 and the big issue was apparent cost cutting by having not enough staff on hand in the dining room and bars.
Breakfast service is now quite poor table upon table of dirty pots....not nice! a PIGSTY.
Evening meal changes from 2 sittings to a come as you please approach have not worked well with confusion and poor dining room management.
Bar service is thin on the ground.
Generally the food is ok they do themed nights with fresh meat and fish on the grill.
All the food is of a German theme even on Chinese night, they dont do an English night nor do they speak it which is fine by me.
Dunas management at the hotel know of the complaints re breakfast and bars and freely admitted to me they get daily complaints about such! but suggested "the owners" were not wanting to increase staff to save costs.
I hope Dunas take note and stop this slide in service I would rate the Hotel 3 holiday star not 4.

“Came back home completely relaxed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2011

I went on this trip with low expectations. I had visions of another tourist island filled with hotels and hotel staff that were sick of tourists. But Don Gregory changed that completely. Yes the hotel could use some refurbishing (our room had water damage on the ceiling), and yes I would have been happier to have some room service so I could drink my coffee on our lovely balcony instead of ordering it at the terrace bar and then bringing it up myself. But in spite of this I cannot help but give the hotel a good rating for several reasons. First, the staff was so friendly and personable, always smiling remembering my name and my tastes. They were quick to remedy any complaint or fulfill my requests. I was truly made to feel at home in a hotel which is quite extraordinary. Second, the buffet was fantastic. If you cannot find something to eat here than it is your own fault. We booked half-board with our stay and were completely satisfied. Finally, the location is perfect. Right on the beach with a promenade to run on in the morning, or stroll along after dinner. At night I fell asleep to the sound of waves crashing on the shore. Dreamy.

Word of warning - if you are looking for an exciting holiday filled with shows and dancing, this is not your destination. Clientele age is average of 60 and up. Hotel lounge is quiet after 10pm. But for a week of relaxation and quiet its perfect and a taxi into town for a lively night out will cost you about 5euros.
